Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

...and on the flip side of that NIU doesn't have as much competition as those Florida schools for in state talent.

I'm not sure that I agree with that statement. They have Northwestern, Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan.... within a few hundred miles of campus. There is plenty of competitioon for talent around those areas, though it seems like the talent around there is more willing to leave the state.

...and that is nothing compared to Florida, Florida State, Miami, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, etc. all down there vying for that talent. Let alone all the teams with a bit of "national prominance" in recruiting trying to snatch what they can from the state.

I'm not saying they dont have to deal with situations similar up there, I just dont think it's in the same ballpark.

I gotta tell you, I really don't like the "small school" mentality that you can't compete with budgets like what OSU has for football. The fact is this...Columbus Ohio isn't Chicago. It can be done. But, you guys (and I mean your schools, of course) don't want to do the work to become "big time" you just want the reward of BEING big time.

That was a great post BKB and well deserves a GPA. It can be done, but it's a long term commitment that requires a vision and mission for the program that university administration departments believe in.

That statement isn't try for NIU at all. Our AD, President, and football coach all have the vision of coming big time.

Most of you don't know this, but about 10 years back this team almost fell out of D-1 football. Novak came in and NIU was in a terrible situation and basically tore down the entire football program and started from scratch. The entire athletic program has been basically built from the ground up in the last 10 years. It is hard to go from barely 1A to big time in 10 years. We are taking the right steps though.

...and it was hard when Ohio State had to do it. He, and I agree, is just saying we are tired of hearing that they "cannot compete" because it's garbage.

i haven't read the whole thread, but how does wolfe compare to sprolles? we shut him down when no one else could. we held him to less than fifty yards. i watched some of the highlights on youtube and he looks awesome. also, how will NIU's OL do against our DL. I'm sorry G-Force but I don't think NIU can win that battle.

I would posit that it is easier to hit the big time now than it was back then. The 85 scholarship limit has left a lot of kids out there for everyone else. Though it is WAY too simple to say something like "Why do some many good Ohio kids play in the MAC now? Because OSU can only take 85" there is some level of truth to it. Look at all of the "big-name" programs that can fall from grace and then quickly bounce back...PSU, Oklahoma, USC, LSU was terrible in DiNardo's last year or two...and look at the "no-names" that have made big splashes recently...Utah, Louisville has joined the Big East, Biose State, Fresno, TCU...hell, Central Florida was 0-11 two years ago and went to a bowl, South Florida didn't even have a program several yearsa go and they're in the Big East now, Rutgers made a bowl, Iowa was 1-10 seemingly forever...it can be done now, easier than back then in my view.

Unbaised opinon says otherwise.

Sportswriters are not necessarily unbiased opinions...and what about the ones who say you will lose by 40? Are those opinions also "unbiased" and just as valid?

You support your team and think they will stay close...a lot of people around here will not follow that line of thought. Nothing is going to change one or the other except the final score on the board when the game is over.
