Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

I didn't make any absurd statements. And excuse me for personally insulting someone who says "we aren't worthy of his time."

From your point of view maybe my statements were absurd. From my point of view, my statements were simply a reflection of the world I see around me stated in a very matter of fact way. Everything I have said in this thread is very likely to be proven correct in 3 months time. The odds are in my favor. Surely, you can see that (and no I didn't just call you Shirley).

After all, how often does David actually beat Goliath in the world of college football? Not that often. A Goliath such as this year's Ohio State team? Never! The only way it happens is if half the Buckeye team goes down with the flu and the other half breaks their ankle on the first play of the game! You know, act of God type stuff. Just like ole David vs. Goliath.

Go back and re-read my previous posts in this discussion. I believe that the general public at large, even beyond those here on this site, would tend to agree with me that this game isn't going to be very close. Perhaps it would have been close in past years, like 2003 when the Buckeyes effectively didn't have any running game or in 2004 when we still didn't have much of a running game and on top of that we breaking in new QB's, maybe then NIU could be looked at as a possible upset special. Remember Marshall in 2004? This isn't 2004!!!!

Yep, thankfully it's no longer 2003/2004 here in buckeye world. This year the Buckeyes have a proven multi-dimensional QB, a proven vetern backup QB, a deep and versatile RB corps, an O-line that will likely be Tressel's best so far, 3 TE's and 2 FB's with previous playing experience, and I'll spare you any further mention of our WR's so as not to cause nightmares. Did you know that speed kills? Especially when you don't have much of it and the other team is loaded with it! Just ask Notre (d)ame. The lower case "d" was used for a very good reason.

Speaking of defense, the Buckeyes have plenty in that department you can be sure. Several new starters? Yes, but these buckeye defenders will have an advantage that most other defenses during Tressels tenure haven't had. This year's defense is coupled with a offense that should be able to score at will, especially against the likes of NIU.

This year's offense also appears to be built to be able to sustain long drives, chewing up clock while the defense rests. This year's defense won't have to endure too many 3 and out's by this offense. Unless of course you count the times the Buckeyes score in only 3 plays. (Insert sarcasm) Gee whiz, I didn't think of that. That kind of ruins my whole argument about the defense getting alot of rest doesn't it. (End sarcasm)

As for the personal insult (calling me a dumbass), I forgive you in the absence of an apology but please try to do better.

Go Bucks!!!

All hail Buckeye Planet's mouthpiece BuckeyeNation27. He who speaks for everyone. He who can be counted on to kowtow to all invading non buckeye fans that decide to grace us with their presence. Fear not, fans of upcoming buckeye opponents for you have a friend behind enemy lines. As long as BuckeyeNation27 is logged on to this site there shall be no solidarity within the Buckeye Nation that he seems to be so inappropriately named for.

Thank you BN27 for being such a good buckeye neighbor. Here I am trying to fight the good fight against G-force and his misguided dillusions of grandeur and what happens? I'm here trying to making an argument in favor of our beloved buckeyes and in return I get a fellow buckeye calling me a loser. That's real nice. Don't worry everyone. If you ever need a hand, BN27 will have your back (and a knife to go in it)!

Dude, you rule. How'd you ever get so good?

Now BN27, before you come back with guns blazing (or even that knife I armed you with up above) please remember that after all, you did call me a loser. Did you think I was just gonna let that go?
Oh I was hoping you would let that go....but now it seems we're locked in a "war of words". :roll2:

Tell you what. I'll make this one easy! I'm not even French but nevertheless, I hereby formally surrender to all fans of opposing teams (excluding scUM fans because, well just because) and I also surrender to all Buckeye Planet memebers and moderators! I'd like nothing better than to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. Maybe we can all just join hands in a big circle around the Horseshoe and sing "Give Peace A Chance". What a sight that would make!

BN27, please don't hate me for loving the Buckeyes enough to not want to take shit from a NIU fan. I don't think that makes me a loser!

NDChief, I've decided that, like the scUM fans, I'm not surrendering to you either. Everyone else. You win.

Uh-Oh... looks like we're taking on the Preseason #1 team in the country... :roll2:

A team led by the the best back in the nation, Garrett Wolfe. They have a stud defence and a terrific secondary. Look for them in a BCS bowl game.

2. Oklahoma Sooners
You've got to be pretty good to go 8-4 while rebuilding. Quarterback Rhett Bomar comes into his own as a sophomore, and junior tailback Adrian Peterson is healthy. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>

If you think the Mountaineers peaked in the Sugar Bowl, then you'll dismiss them. But they've shown what they can do. West Virginia's biggest obstacle is ego expansion. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>

Lower than I expected, because both lines have to be rebuilt, and because of road games at Auburn, Florida and Tennessee. There's sure a lot of talent on offense, though. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>

The Ducks have plenty to sink their beaks into: road games at Fresno State, Cal and USC. OU comes to Autzen Stadium, which has replaced Husky Stadium as the toughest venue in the Pac-10. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>

The Wolverines are my dark horse this season. That's right. This team wasn't all that good last year. But RB Mike Hart is healthy, and I think new coordinator Ron English will fix what ailed the defense. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>

The Cardinals and West Virginia have reversed roles. It's WVU's turn to deal with expectations. I'd rank the Cardinals higher if I knew for sure that quarterback Brian Brohm will have recovered from knee surgery. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
2390.gif
18. Miami Hurricanes
Too low? Shoot, this is a leap of faith. To be honest, I expect this to be a transition year into a new offense with a new offensive coaching staff. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
2628.gif
19. TCU Horned Frogs
If the Frogs had more than one returning offensive lineman, they would be in the top 10. All the other pieces are there, and early games against Baylor and Texas Tech will provide schedule cred. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
103.gif
20. Boston College Eagles
A good nucleus of experience, led by the offensive line (74 returning starts) and LB Brian Toal on defense. Strange scheduling: Eagles close at Miami, which means they could play the Canes again nine days later in the ACC title game. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
213.gif
21. Penn State Nittany Lions
The Nittany Lions will fall off from 11-1, but there's still a lot of skill on offense, and there's still Puz to anchor a young defense. Penn State fans need to be patient with quarterback Anthony Morelli. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
61.gif
22. Georgia Bulldogs
The SEC East is as tough as ever, and the Bulldogs have less coming back than the rest of the Top 25. Can Joe Tereshinski III run the offense well enough early enough? </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
2638.gif
23. UTEP Miners
Quarterback Jordan Palmer has the eye of NFL scouts and the defense returns almost intact (which may be a good thing). Texas Tech comes to El Paso early, which could boost UTEP into a higher ranking. Four road games in five weeks will be rough. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td>
259.gif
24. Virginia Tech Hokies
The Hokies lost almost as much (12 starters) as Georgia, and Frank Beamer has four new coaches. But with this schedule, the Hokies could be mediocre and go 8-4. </td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(236, 236, 236);" valign="top"> <td> http://aolsearch.aol.com/aol/imageD...ype=xImage&clickstreamid=-4822214913680826981http://images-partners.google.com/images?q=tbn:f48KetfLn1Y-aM:www.teamline.cc/images/logos/toledo.gif25.Toledo Rockets
A good contender for the MAC title. They have a running back, Ray Williams, who was released by West Virginia and the Rockets picked him up, he may be a powerful force on their ground game. They should be in a major bowl.

So tell me what do you think the score will be ?

I say OSU 45 NIU 10

Haha, that'd be nice, but we'll probably pull starters before it becomes a complete thrashing.

I'll go with:

Ohio State: 38
NIU: 17

I'm only giving NIU, 17 points because it's the first game of the season, and there will be new starters, and they will more than likely be pulled before the game is over.

Defending Ohio State doesn't make you a loser, acting like you're in a "war of words" with somebody and that somehow if you don't win this "war" then the world will be over does. Referring to it as such and declaring yourself "the winner" also helps.

Settle down. You would do better to not lump every team into the "BCS Team" category. With teams like Indiana, Wake Forest, and Duke in that list, it really doesn't mean a whole lot.

Hey NIU007,

Welcome to Buckeye Planet! Feel free to jump right in and mix it up! G-force will undoubtedly be happy to see you. He's been doing a good job but it's hard for one person fend off twenty. If you know of any other NIU fans that are pumped for this matchup, please tell them to come on over and state their case. It's gonna be a long summer and we all need our football fix if you know what I mean! I'm not one who typically likes to wish my life away but damn, September can't get here fast enough!

Go Bucks!!!

Thanks! I generally don't post as much as G-Force even on the NIU board, I just throw an occasional comment in. G-Force made a prediction on the score of the game, you probably don't agree with it but it's just a prediction. I hope we can keep the game close too, with Wolfe anything can happen and I think that's what GF was referring to. We need to protect the ball better than last year against Michigan, that was ridiculous. The final score of the game will depend somewhat on how much Tressel substitutes as well as all the other stuff mentioned above. Honestly, I don't know how we stop OSU since we couldn't stop Akron last year, twice. Our defense will be better and we do have some talent so who knows?

It's always fun to play a team you don't normally play, just to see what happens. Should be interesting. One thing about our record against BCS teams - we pretty much always play on the road, since our stadium is small and most teams figure they have nothing to gain by playing us in Huskie stadium. The last 2 that did, Iowa State and Maryland, lost to us. So our record against BCS teams is a little deceptive.

Personally, I root for NIU and anybody that plays Notre Dame. Anyway, enough rambling for now.

Quit making yourself out to be some sort of martyr. You keep repeating the same crap, over and over and over. We've all seen your claim that NIU "puts a scare" into BCS team, and we've seen post the same list more than once. This thread has become nothing more than your little penis-envy statement thread on how you demand NIU be respected. News flash, we don't have to respect NIU or any other mid-level MAC team. We don't care that you're 1-7 against the last BCS teams you've played, regardless of how close a couple of the scores may have been. No matter how many times you post it, we're not buying it. If you want to bring some new discussion or observations into the thread, then fine. You've made a few good posts on team, giving specifics on players other than Wolfe and how they could impact the game...that's great. But rehashing the same "Wolfe is great" and "We scare BCS teams" over and over and over is not. Keep in mind that you're a guest here...

So who will be OSU's best defensive player this year? Who's the guy we (and the rest of the teams) need to worry about the most?

By the way, every time I try to post it asks me to login again for some reason. Way to make it difficult for opposing fans to post.

Shoot, you figured it out. :p

Make sure you click "Remember Me" and have cookies enabled. Sometimes I've noticed that in IE the front page will say you aren't logged in, but the other pages are fine.

As for the defensive players... let one of our football smarties give you the details, but I'd say the reports that they are gelling extremely well as a unit and have more overall speed than last year are probably as big a factor as individual strengths.
