Game Thread Game Nine: #1 tOSU 44, Minnesota 0 (10/28/06)

So nice to see a shutout. My goodness, that is some defense. Great to see Zwick get a score and to see the second half offensive production. A bit worried about the fumbles but I am sure that it will be a topic of conversation from Coach Tressel this week

Boy, I love this team. This was NOT a bad team we played this week. We put about 100 yards more rushing on them than their average and we just completely shut them down.

:oh: :osu: :io:

Is this concussion going to have any lasting effects on Gonzo?
It'll seriously impact his draft stock. That's two concussions this year, and NFL teams aren't going to invest first day money in a possession receiver that already has a history of concussions.

BUCKEYES ROLL PAST GOPHERS 44-0 FOR NINTH WIN

COLUMBUS (AP) ? Troy Smith and Ohio State appear to be in cruise control.
Smith added to his Heisman Trophy resume by running for one touchdown and throwing for another to lead No. 1 Ohio State past Minnesota 44-0 on Saturday.

Antonio Pittman rushed for two scores for the Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten), who have won every game this season by at least 17 points. They play lowly Illinois and Northwestern, each of whom is 2-7, the next two weeks while tuning up for the regular-season finale against No. 2 Michigan on Nov. 18 at Ohio Stadium.

Jack Nicklaus, a former Ohio State golfer who grew up in the Columbus area, received a thunderous standing ovation at halftime when he "dotted the "i" in the band's signature maneuver, Script Ohio.

The Buckeyes, for the most part, were substantially under par on this day. It was another impressive performance by a defense that came in tied for the national lead in fewest points allowed (8.2 per game). Only two teams have scored more than seven points against Ohio State this season.

Ohio State intercepted Minnesota's Bryan Cupito three times and never faced a serious threat from the Golden Gophers (3-6, 0-5), despite playing without stellar defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock, who was out with a concussion.

The offense dominated, piling up 484 yards, though three lost fumbles kept the score from being more onesided before a homecoming crowd of 105,443.

Smith's Heisman moment came with Ohio State in command early in the third quarter.

He kept the ball on a run off left tackle and then cut back against the grain and outran the defense to score on a 21-yard touchdown run to make it 24-0.

He also tossed an 18-yard scoring pass to Brian Robiskie, completing 14-of-21 passes for 183 yards with no interceptions while rushing for 43 yards on six attempts.

Pittman gained 116 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 10 and 13 yards. Chris Wells and Justin Zwick added short touchdown runs.

It was a stunning turnaround for Ohio State's defense. A year ago, Cupito passed for 396 yards and helped the Golden Gophers (3-6, 0-5) pile up 578 yards _ the second-most against Ohio State in 117 years of football. The Buckeyes still won, 45-31.

This time the Gophers never got going and finished with 182 yards _ they had four more yards in punting than in offense.

They punted the ball away the first three times they had it before getting stopped on a fourth-and-1 run at the Ohio State 29 and then turned the ball over on an interception.

The Buckeyes scored on their first two possessions and then toyed with the Golden Gophers the rest of the day.

Every play gained at least 3 yards and none more than 11 as Ohio State stuck mostly on the ground to go 57 yards for the opening score. Pittman covered the last 10 after sliding through a crack in the front wall provided by the standup blocks by Alex Boone and Steve Rehring.

The big play on the second possession was a 30-yard screen play, Smith rolling right and then tossing back to the left where Pittman had a convoy of blockers. Two runs and an incompletion led to Aaron Pettrey's 42-yard field goal.

After Wells (90 yards on 15 carries) and Smith lost fumbles, Smith looked off two potential receivers before throwing into the right corner of the end zone where Robiskie dived to make the grab.

NCAA Game Summary - Minnesota At Ohio State

POSTED: 6:00 pm CDT October 28, 2006
Columbus, OH -- (Sports Network) - Troy Smith continued his run at the Heisman Trophy with 183 yards passing, 43 yards rushing and a touchdown toss and run, and top-ranked Ohio State continued its run at a perfect season with a 44-0 rout of Minnesota at the Horseshoe. While the Buckeyes still need to visit Champagne for a battle against Illinois and Evanston to square off with Northwestern, a Big Ten title and trip to Glendale, Arizona for the national championship game may rest on a November 18 clash in Columbus with heated rival and second-ranked Michigan. Ohio State (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) didn't gaze into the future at the maize and blue, instead dominating a Minnesota club fresh off a 10-9 victory over 1-AA power North Dakota State. The win was Ohio State's national-best 16th straight, with its last setback coming under the lights in Happy Valley against Penn State on October 8, 2005. The Buckeyes have won every game during the 2006 campaign by at least 17 points, demonstrating their season-long dominance. Antonio Pittman, the unheralded member of a dynamic offense that features Smith, speedster Ted Ginn Jr. and physical wideout Anthony Gonzalez, rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns while Chris Wells piled up 90 yards and another score when the game was well in hand. Bryan Cupito completed 13-of-25 passes for 120 yards with three interceptions and Amir Pinnix struggled to collect 46 yards on the ground for the Golden Gophers (3-6, 0-5), who now must win out against Indiana, Michigan State and Iowa to become bowl eligible. The Buckeyes wasted no time reaching the end zone, taking their first drive right past, around and eventually through the Minnesota defense. Smith aired it out just one time on a march featuring a heavy dose of Pittman, who capped the 8-play, 57-yard drive with a 10-yard burst off left end. After another Golden Gopher punt, Smith's 30-yard screen pass to Pittman set up Aaron Pettrey's 42-yard field goal for a 10-0 edge with 5:49 left in the first quarter. The Buckeyes coughed up the ball on their next two drives -- one inside the Minnesota 10-yard line -- before putting together a 71-yard march that ran the offensive gambit. After four straight runs, Smith found Gonzalez near the sideline for 11 yards and later worked outside the hash again to Ginn for 15 yards. A well-thrown lob to Brian Robiskie, who shielded his body and came up with the 18-yard pass for a touchdown, upped the advantage to 17-0 with 3:49 left in the half. Cupito was picked off on the initial series of the second half, and the Buckeyes reached paydirt once again. The multi-talented quarterback slashed through the middle of the defense for a 21-yard touchdown run with 12:41 remaining in the stanza. The Buckeye machine continued to run like clockwork on another third-quarter series, as they converted a Cupito interception into a touchdown. Pittman bounced off the right end and won a foot race to the end zone from 13 yards out for a 30-0 edge. Wells added a two-yard plunge in garbage time to make the score 37-0 with 13:33 on the clock. Back-up quarterback Justin Zwick's one-yard touchdown run then capped the scoring.Game Notes:Head coach Jim Tressel's Buckeyes are 46-4 when they pile up at least 24 points...The Buckeyes now lead the all-time series 39-7, including victories in 20 of the last 23 in Columbus...Gonzalez left the game late in the first half with a mild concussion...Ohio State outrushed Minnesota 266-47 and piled up 484 total yards to 182 for the Golden Gophers...Golf icon and Ohio State alum Jack Nicklaus dotted the "I" -- an Ohio State marching band tradition -- prior to the contest.
