Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

:( :sad2: :shake:  :frown2: :ohwell: :sob:

This is about how I feel right now. I wish I hadn't gone to the game. It sucked. I don't think I ever want to go back there. Going to scUM, even though every time i've been we've lost, is more enjoyable. I have faith in Jim Tressel. The offense looked like a deer in the headlights, but I'm not ready to just jump ship, after everybody was jumping on after last week. It's good to question things...to strive to get better. The quesitons should be there. What do we need to do to get better? But I don't like the "What did we do wrong?" questions. Every game has a loser. Just because you lose doesn't mean you did something wrong. I don't feel that we did anything wrong this game...we just lost. It was a tough game, a tough place to play. We just aren't the best team in the country this year. I guess if we played perfect every game, we'd win them all...but you can't expect that. Sometimes the breaks go your way, and sometimes they don't. Special players make these breaks happen. That's something you can't coach...it's just something that certain special players have. It can't be coached. Craig Krenzel and Chris Gamble had it for us in 2002. A.J. Hawk has it for us this year, but nobody on offense does. As talented as we are on offense, there is nobody that will step up and take charge and create the breaks we need to win close games. Ted Ginn was that player at the end of last year. But...he's not the same player he was.

I keep coming back to the same thought after this game.

A hypothetical question:

If OSU had indeed recruited and landed Tyrell Sutton on this team, would anyone else in the B10 know his name by now after 5 games?

I think the answer is no, especially because of the type of back he is. And yes this opinion is an indictment of the offensive coaching staff.

Wanted O-Coordinator

Naa, Smith had alot of time to throw the ball. Keep in mind that PSU does have a good D-front and good linebackers. With that in mind, I thought the line did a decent job of pass blocking. Still just saw alot of short, and bad routes, very predictable, not alot of open receivers. I am sure some of it is Smith not seeing those receivers, taking off running too early, whatever. There is definitely no 1 problem with the team. The offense is the problem, but there are many sub-problems to that.

All of these observations are true - - and yet - - you know that we will come out and shellac some other team (maybe MSU), and put up 500+ yards and 30+ points. Ginn, Smith, Holmes, Pittman, and Gonzales will have some amazing highlight reel plays.

Then we will turn right around and lay an egg offensively another day.

OSU will not put a consistent offensive product on the field until a talented offensive coordinator joins the program.

I love JT's program and his players love him. But what was our offense ranked last year? And why can't we do basic things like get plays in from the sideline in time to beat the play clock? Furthermore, when was the last time we came out of the locker room (or a time out) with offensive adjustments. And finally, when was the last time a commentator said of our offense: "XYZ was really out-coached by OSU today,,, what an offensive game-plan we've seen!"

I love my Bucks, but they are an offensive Jeckyll and Hyde right now.

I think that would be the last Alamo Bowl - though the statement was worded slightly differently, the sentiment was identical.

Regardless, a better set of schemes for each and every game would be an improvement - a new OC could gt us there if JT empowers him to do the job right.

...or no, because he would be buried on OSU's depth chart.

So he's entirely to blame for the offense, but can't receive any recognition for the defense. brilliant as usual. yes I realize he calls the plays. Lloyd doesn't do either, but somehow he's blamed or praised for both.
We really do have great talent on offense, but we are not using it. Tressel doen not seem to know very much about offensive football and he is in charge of what we see. It is quite pathetic and will never change without an Of. Cood. We had much better talent and experience on offfense than PSU!

Yes I do! The new Notre Dame football coach. What a difference a year makes and the man is new to college football. He runs a beautiful diversified offense and with near precision. Tressel has been around football since he was 5 years old. It does not show in his offensive play calling nor his answers and conversational skills when ask a question. He seemingly has not developed a football IQ! No screens, reverses, mis-direction plays, halfback option pass, flea flicker, post patterns, quarterback running option passes, slants, across the middle and a no huddle offense with short crisp passing. Zwick would be much better with this offense or lack there of. Zwick is a better QB when given the same set of variables and opportunities. I am a retired coach and I have been watching highschool and college football all of my life. We are terrible and quite predictable on offense and we do NOT use our superiority on offense to score touchdowns. Several coaches in the OCC would do better on offense.

if that topic even comes up over here, I might just leave for a week. I went over to BN to check on info on Barton/Rehring and the spewing going on over there abut sutton is unbearable. Serves me right for visiting that board.

Not sure if you missed my point or not. I am not questioning the talent we have or how much talent Sutton has. I'm actually sort of making the case the backs we do have may be better but we'd never know it. I'm not pining for Sutton and saying he would be cure all for this offense. I just think our offensive coaching has trouble getting their playmakers into positions and situations to be successful.

Welcome aboard and well said, great example with Coach Wies and the Domers, not a big Zwick fan though.

Can you imagine what we would look like on offense if we had Weis in charge of the O?
We have more talent at every position, more speed, everything...
