G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Turner's ability to dish the rock and Kofous continuing to develop his passing out of the post will only help Diebler light it up from outside. That is why I love this '07 class...you have Kofous who is just a nightmare of a matchup for almost anyone, you have the bruiser down low in Lauderdale, you have the guy who is in range the moment he steps in the gym in Diebler, and then you have the guy who can run the show and play some solid D in Turner. This class just has a little bit of everything...

From the Big Time Classic this weekend in Las Vagas...

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><ST1:pIllinois Wolves 66 - Worldwide Renegades 64
<O:p</O:p

We just got to catch the last couple minutes of this one, but it was worth it, as the Illinois Wolves came from behind in the second half to nip the Worldwide Renegades 66-64 in one of the days elite eight match-ups. It was close throughout and came down to the final shot as Worldwide's 6-3 Chris Allen missed a shot at the buzzer that could have pulled for the Renegades.
<O:p</O:p

This one featured balanced scoring on both sides as seven players made it into double figures. The Wolves were lead by 6-6 Evan Turner with 17 points while 6-1 Sam Maniscalco added 14 points (4-threes) and 6-8 Carlton Fay chipped in with 13 points. 6-3 Demetri McCamey added 8 points and handed out 6 assists for the victors.
<O:p</O:p

The Renegades top guns were 5-10 point and the above mentioned Allen with 15 points each. They received solid support from 6-9 James Hickson with 10 points and 6-3 Mfon Udofia who chipped in with 11 points.

I actually know Evan pretty well I played basketball with him for about 5 years, and him being good enough to actually warrant divison 1 interest is pretty surprising. He was always good, but always was the second best player on all the teams I played on with him.

However, if I were to be asked out of all the players that I played with which was going to reach his caliber, I would have guessed Evan just because he's always had the best all around game. He can really do everything, but I think on the higher levels he might be a case of Jack of all trades, Master of None.

We'll see though, and I'm very glad Evan took a scholarship from the team I follow, should be fun.

the kid has upwards of 20 offers, someone must thing hes not going to be the "master of none" at the next level. so many of these hs kids get pegged, playing an all around game. two things you have to realize
1 these kids going to top shelf d1 kids cant be graded at a high school level with only a few exceptions. they are so far above the avg hser that their ability is almost negated by an average player.
2 they cant be judged at all on film, in football you can watch a highlight video and peg a kids ability and what he has. i dont or cant. i have yet to see anyone do it with great success without the whole game film. even then you get kids who are hot/cold and are rated poorly.

on a side note, nearly all of the analysis and viewing is done at the aau level. elite level aau teams made up of city/regional/state teams give a more realistic view of the kid. one reason, he is surrounded by simlar talent hell face at the next level.

the second i have come to learn is that 20 some college mens basketball coaches know more than me. i may question in game coaching and some recruits, but 19 top levle guys dont recruit a guy b/c duke does. it just doenst work that way. these guys watch these kids eat, sleep, breathe during the summer evaluation.

Well, he has consistently been ranked number two in Illinois behind Derrick Rose by every Illinois-based scout that I have seen. Even if he isn't a go-to guy for Ohio State, saying that it is a surprise that Turner is a DI recruit (let alone high major recruit) is a dumb comment, and I've never seen him play a whole game. Just from the perspective of knowing what a DI recruit is, Turner easily qualifies based on his productivity in AAU and a renowned HS. Maybe you didn't realize how good your teams were?

But you probably know a thing or two about him, and you are entitled to your opinion. I don't think anyone is expecting him to be "The Man" in Columbus, so he will probably fit in just right with the mix.

ok, i saw him play a few games, and ill tell you this...he still needs to improve, obviously, but he needs to get a little bigger physically, but he is very smooth, and can get to the basket ANY time he wants...but he needs to finish stronger than he does...that doesnt mean he needs to dunk it, but he has missed a few to many layups...they were contested, but thats gonna happen, he needs to finish.

I said it was a surprise because I played with Evan a lot. I'm played with him on an AYBT team (somewhat similar to AAU on a slightly lower scale) on 7th and 8th grade teams and some recreational leagues. On all those teams Evan was never dominant, he was never a guy that took control of a game. I know that's not what we are expecting out of him at OSU, but usually guys who get the type of recruiting Evan did really dominated the leagues they played in at that age.

I'm not saying Evan doesn't deserve his scholarship, and I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to be on the team. I love Evan, and I'm really glad I'll be able to cheer for him while watching my team, and I hope he does well and gets drafted eventually. All I'm saying is that everyone who played with him are all slightly surprised that he got all of this attention.

Does Matta need Turner to be dominant or very solid all around? With the scorers coming to town, many of which that may not be in town for 4 years, Turner may fit a great role with his all-around game.

some really really great ball players arent dominant, they do all the little things. they play defense, they hustle, they pass, and when need be they score and do the flashy things. contrary to popular belief you dont win games in the b10 or late march b/c of superstars, you win games b/c of fundamentals and the little things. i willing to bet however the game changes in my lifetime, things will change based on defense, rebounding and turnovers. you cant ever overlook a player due to the fact hes not flashy. look at chris quinn at notre dame, he does get much recog, but hes a helluva a college player, sets the temp and the offense. youve got 8 guys wholl see the floor 5 at a time and 1 basketball. meaning four guys are (or should be) doing dirty work off all the ball.
