Release: 07/11/2009

Featuring four players who scored in double digits, the 2009 USA Men?s World University Games Team (6-1) rebounded from its semifinal loss and collected the bronze medal after defeating Israel (6-2) 91-80 on Saturday evening in Belgrade, Serbia. Host Serbia (5-1) will play Russia (6-1) in the gold medal game at 9:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. EDT). Medaling in every World University Games in which a USA Basketball team has competed, the USA is now 131-8 in all-time World University Games play and owns a record 13 gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals.

Lazar Hayward (Marquette / Buffalo, N.Y.) led the attack with 14 points, Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia / Newark, N.J.) netted 13, Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.) pitched in 12 and Evan Turner (Ohio State / Chicago, Ill.) scored 10 points and dished out three assists.

?Our guys showed a lot of grit,? said USA and University of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. ?There were a couple pushes that Israel made, and we answered. They cut our lead to four, they got it to two and then four again, and they stayed around. Then we opened it up. Our guys kept fighting, too. Israel wanted a medal as bad as we did.?

?Israel is a really good team, and they wanted to win as well,? said Hayward. ?Everybody wants to beat USA, so we are always going to get their best shot. They didn?t give up until the buzzer sounded.?

OSU men's basketball: Turner learned lessons abroad
Guard got comfortable sharing the ball, recorded three assists for each turnover

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Evan Turner was "the class of the roster," one Web site said, during tryouts for the U.S. World University Games team.

Another observer predicted that Turner would be the team's leading scorer in the tournament in Serbia.

However, Turner averaged a team-low four points as the United States won six of seven games and the bronze medal in men's basketball this month. Yesterday, back at Ohio State, he explained why.

"We had lost to Serbia, and I think I scored big that night," Turner said, referring to a 16-point exhibition loss June 28 in which he scored 16 points. "After the game, a couple (of teammates) were complaining about (not getting) the ball and moving the ball around (more).

"I knew I don't have to score to play well, and I probably could do just as well passing the ball around and getting teammates involved. I was just trying to build chemistry and camaraderie and keep everyone happy. You're all all-stars, you all kind of have egos, and I was just trying to fit in instead of stand out because sometimes that may not be the best thing."

I am happy for Evan but still confused as to why he played so little in comparison to his talent/play leading up to the tourney/etc. I really loathe Bo Ryan so itd be easy to make a comment about that damn raccoon but I will withold that for now. Cant wait to see Evan once the season starts

You forgot "Fuck Bucky!" :io:

Cover boy
I received a card in the mail today from Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, telling me its Web site has a new address and, of course, pitching the incomparable publication for the 2009-10 season.

Also included on the card was a photo of what appears to be the cover for this season's book. Five players are on it: Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins of Kansas, Luke Harangody of Notre Dame, Kyle Singler of Duke and our very own Evan Turner.

Does that mean Turner's a preseason first-team All-American in the eyes of the Blue Ribbon staff? I guess we'll just have to wait until I get my book in October.

Turner one of Katz's Wooden Award favorites

Andy Katz of ESPN was among the media members from whom the Wooden Award folks solicited names for their first list of 2010 award candidates. Katz gave them 50 names, then offered his top 15 in his Daily Word column yesterday. His 15 include Ohio State junior Evan Turner.

12. Evan Turner, Ohio State -- Turner could be a bust-out scorer for a Buckeyes' team that is primed for a deep run in March. If Turner can make the Buckeyes stand out even more, then he's got a shot to receive plenty of accolades.

Role Playing: Evan Turner arrived at the WUG tryouts as a scorer. But coach Bo Ryan didn't need the Ohio State guard for that role. So instead, he made sure Turner was a defender, a contributor and a distributor. Turner learned how to mesh with others and flourish. He'll need to do a little bit of everything for the Buckeyes, a trendy pick to make some noise atop the Big Ten.

Ohio State's Evan Turner wanted a showdown with Isiah Thomas: Video
by Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
Thursday August 27, 2009

Isiah Thomas isn't the only one upset about Florida International opening the season with North Carolina instead of Ohio State. His fellow alum of St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Ill., Ohio State junior Evan Turner, wasn't happy either.

A refresher on the background: Thomas, the former star at Indiana and with the Detroit Pistons, is the new coach at Florida International. Both Ohio State and FIU thought they were playing each other to open the season in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. But it turns out that FIU is going to open against defending national champion North Carolina instead.

FIU isn't happy. My guess? Thomas expects his team to get beaten soundly either way - Ohio State is returning all its starters while North Carolina returns only one and the Buckeyes could very well be better than North Carolina, at least early in the season. But losing to Ohio State on the Big Ten Network is the ninth story on SportsCenter that night. Losing to North Carolina in ESPNU is a much bigger story, and probably not in a good way for Florida International.

Turner is upset for another reason. Playing at St. Joe for legendary coach Gene Pingatore, he heard about Thomas constantly. But he has never met Thomas. Turner figured this was the time when the two greatest players in St. Joe history would finally cross paths. But it doesn't look that way.

And check the end of the video. Turner isn't just handing that greatest St. Joe player honor to Thomas without a little fight.

Turner starting at the point

Ohio State turned in its starting lineup against the University of Windsor about 5:15 p.m. and, as has been speculated all offseason, Evan Turner will open at point guard.

Jon Diebler and William Buford will be on the wings, David Lighty at forward and Dallas Lauderdale at center.

The three exhibition games -- tonight and Saturday night against Windsor, Monday against Western Ontario -- will be played by FIBA rules, meaning a 24-second possession clock will be in effect and the teams will play four 10-minute quarters. Canadian colleges play by those rules normally.

Judging from what I saw yesterday in practice drills, with guards rebounding and taking off quickly downcourt with the ball, Ohio State is going to look to run. First, though, it has to rebound. With the starting lineup including no one smaller than 6 feet 5, you would think that would not be a problem. It has been in the past, though
