G D'Angelo Russell (Unanimous 1st Team All-American, All-Star, Los Angeles Lakers)

What I mean is, that the University should pay for his tuition and board out of its own non-scholarshop funds, and make a bookkeeping transfer if he's approved, but I'll bet that's forbidden by the NCAA too, and if so, it's a disgrace to OSU (and hundreds of other universities) to allow itself to be dictated to by a marketing organization in that way. Consider this: what if he's approved tomorrow, or next week, and starts to attend classes, but finds it difficult to catch up, and pulls a bunch of miserably bad grades as a result? Do you understand how transformative of the college experience a single bad quarter can be? It should be an enjoyable intellectual and social experience, but instead it turns into a misery of stress and anxiety, always trying to catch up and keep one's head above water, and it affects all aspects of one's life. I've been there, although not in an athletic context. I had a bad quarter, due to circumstances out of my control, and instead of being above the average, with a comfortable cushion beneath me, I was below-average, with an abyss below. If we do this to D'Angelo, it's just a dirty, dirty trick to play on a kid who's trying to do the right thing.
I think we are all in agreement with you but unfortunately it is the NCAA that makes the rules. He will not be able to enroll until they clear him unless it is on his dime and to make things worse he is an out-of-state student.

It looks like Matta is very high on D'Angelo

Q. What are real expectations in your mind for D'Angelo this year? I know there might be a lot of expectations for how he can help carry your offense?

THAD MATTA: Yeah, I think with D'Angelo, all I can say right now is I'm very pleased with how he's playing in practice, the strides he's making. He's doing a great job of kind of taking the court over every time he steps on the court. How does that factor into once we start playing games, the lights are on? He's played in some huge basketball games throughout his high school career, AAU career. And he's come up ‑‑ two high school national championships with Montverde is impressive. He's going to have some ups and downs, but I like his demeanor. I like the things that he can do on the court, and we've got to keep coaching him and keep him as healthy as we can.

Russell was alright at PG in practice - makes some high risk (some would say careless) passes at times, but he really lit it up at SG. I like him playing at the 2 alongside of Scott because they both have the ability to handle, pass, and shoot (yes, I'm saying Scott is going to shoot well this year now that he is playing the 1 exclusively). So while this team doesn't have a lot in the way of true backcourt players, the versatility and skill of Russell is going to be a major factor on this team. Russell has deep range and a smooth, quick release.

D’Angelo Russell, freshman guard
On the scoring distribution tonight

“Tonight there were five guys who got into double figures, but it could be any five guys. We have a great group of guys who can score the ball, it just happened to be that five tonight. I don’t think any of the newcomers were nervous. I think we’re past that stage, and now it’s just about getting the job done.”

D'Angelo is very obviously the best player on this team, and it's not really close.

Lottery pick 2015, unfortunately.
Let us not get carried away. He is a very very good player but lottery pick. I do not think so. One of the reasons he came to Ohio State was because Matta told him that he would use him like he did Evan Turner at the PG.
