CLEVELAND - A former college basketball player who robbed Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia of $44,000 in cash and jewelry in 2002 has been freed after serving two years and one month of a four-year prison sentence.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Russo ordered the release Monday of Damon Stringer, one of two former Cleveland State players who pleaded guilty to robbing Sabathia at gunpoint at a Cleveland hotel party.
Stringer, 27, will be monitored at home electronically until he finds a full-time job, and is under two years of intensive probation. Any violation could return Stringer to prison for up to 11 years, Russo said.
Stringer's teammate at Cleveland State, Jamaal Harris, was released from the same sentence in June. Russo delayed Stringer's release request because Stringer had gotten into a prison fight.
Stringer and Harris, who had been teammates at Cleveland Heights High School, were pursuing professional basketball careers in Europe before the holdup.
Stringer also played basketball at Ohio State but left the Buckeyes because of legal troubles. He was selected Ohio Mr. Basketball in 1995 as the top prep player in the state.
