Basketball player who robbed Sabathia freed from prison

Associated Press

CLEVELAND - A former college basketball player who robbed Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia of $44,000 in cash and jewelry in 2002 has been freed after serving two years and one month of a four-year prison sentence.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Russo ordered the release Monday of Damon Stringer, one of two former Cleveland State players who pleaded guilty to robbing Sabathia at gunpoint at a Cleveland hotel party.

Stringer, 27, will be monitored at home electronically until he finds a full-time job, and is under two years of intensive probation. Any violation could return Stringer to prison for up to 11 years, Russo said.

Stringer's teammate at Cleveland State, Jamaal Harris, was released from the same sentence in June. Russo delayed Stringer's release request because Stringer had gotten into a prison fight.

Stringer and Harris, who had been teammates at Cleveland Heights High School, were pursuing professional basketball careers in Europe before the holdup.

Stringer also played basketball at Ohio State but left the Buckeyes because of legal troubles. He was selected Ohio Mr. Basketball in 1995 as the top prep player in the state.

i know a kid from my neighboring town that went to cleveland state for a year. he sucked and nobody could figure out why he got the scholarship, but he did. one year later he wasnt even playing ball at the local community college.

it was around that time too. maybe a year before.

Stringer attacked my buddy when we were at tOSU. My friend accidentally backed into his car. Stringer freaked out and jumped on the hood of my buddies car. He proceeded to smash his sun-roof and dented almost every peice of his car by kicking it. My buddy was scared and called the cops. I believe this resulted in Stringer's removal from tOSU. What a waste of talent. Reminds me of Greg Simpson

The first main speaker for the day was Damon Stringer. Stringer started his college career at The Ohio State University, transferring to Cleveland State University after his sophomore year. He went on to play professional basketball in China and other countries.

His message to the young men at the First Team event was to stay away from drugs, alcohol and gambling.

"Drugs and alcohol will hurt you. If you think they won't hurt you, you are dead wrong," Stringer said. "There is no place in your life as an athlete to use drugs and alcohol. You will attract a lot of attention to yourself because you are good players. And it isn't always good attention."

He started his part of the conference by having one side of the large conference yell out "Set realistic and detailed goals and stay focused on them daily." The other side of the room yelled back, "Say no to drugs and alcohol."

He explained the more successful one becomes, the more outside influences can get in the way. And those influences can be bad.

When he was at Ohio State, Stringer said he let his focus on his goals drop when he was injured, and he got involved with people who did not have his best interests in mind. He did not set goals during the injury and got into trouble at school. That was part of the reason he transferred to Cleveland State.

After college, he played basketball in China, then returned to the U.S. to try out for the NBA. He went to a party, where there were drugs, alcohol and gambling. He and friends got in a fight over money, and a gun was pulled. He was sentenced to four years in prison, serving two, and ending his dream of playing in the NBA.

"Drugs break down the body. Put down any drugs, just say sober. You don't want to look back and regret your decisions."

Stringer said if he would have stayed clean, he may have had a different path. He hopes his life was not in vain. And he was happy to share his message with the First Team members.
