Fun things/places in New England

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • The wife and I are taking a vacation there in June. Flying into Portland, Maine and then renting a car. We're pretty open to where we'll visit. I've told her that I'd like to go to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire and maybe stop for a few hours at the Mohegan Sun in CT.

We're planning on visiting Providence, Boston, and we're staying at a real nice hotel in I believe Bay Harbor, Maine just outside of the Acadia National Forest.

There are tons of things you could do. If you are staying in Acadia, head to the top of Cadillac Mountain -- amazing views. There are also tons of hiking trails and places to kayak in the area. Bar Harbor is a great area. If your wife is a shopper, you could stop in Freeport and visit LL Bean and the tons of stores there (and you could hang out at Gritty McDuff's (brewery). Portland has a ton of breweries as well.

In Providence, have a meal on Federal Hill. Amazing italian restaurants there. You might want to head down to Newport -- it's a beautiful coastal town. The cliffwalk is great.

In Boston, you could take a trolley tour (or Duck Boat tour), which is a great way to see the city. The tours allow you to get out whenever you want and walk around. Faneuil Hall is a popular tourist place. To see lots of history, walk the Freedom Trail. A walk along the Charles River Esplanade is great, too -- lots of sailboats out that time of year. Harvard Square might not be your bag, but it's a spectacle. You could also head to the Sam Adams Brewery for a tour or visit the JFK Museum. Boston is truly a walking city, so bring comfy shoes! Just a short ride away from Boston is Salem and Cape Cod. Provincetown is VERY gay-friendly area -- they would welcome you with open arms. :p

You staying in Bay Harbor or Bar Harbor?

    Go whale watching

Do NOT go to any chain restaurants while there.

As soon as you get your rental car head to Olde Town along the wharf in Portland. Get out, walk around, check out the shops and have a beer and some fresh seafood at one of the places on the water.

Make sure your rental car is big enough if you go to Bean's. :wink2:

Do NOT ask for directions from any local. They will have you turning left where the Smith barn was before it burned down 30 years ago.

I hope the weather is nice as your time should be spent outside there.

    Bar Harbor, my mistake.

Sad thing is, I don't like lobster. :(

We arrive in Portland around noon so I'll look at heading to the Olde Town by the wharf.

    Thanks BIM!

I just checked the net and the waterfront area is called Old Port. I wouldn't want to send you to the wrong place.

I do not care for lobster either and I never was hungry my last visit, except the first night there. Airline lost my wife's luggage and we were not allowed to leave the hotel until it arrived (per my wife). The hotel had no kitchen.

    Thanks for the heads up!

Wouldn't want to head to Olde Towne and it ends up being like the Blue Oyster Bar from Police Academy!
