Friday Night Lights at tOSU - July 27, 2012

1. Shelton Gibson - electric. Skinny, built like Teddy G. I could watch him all day in 1v1's. The crowd knew who he was real quick.

2. Artavis Scott - best player on the field. Blows right by everybody at WR, then turns around and plays lockdown corner.

3. Darius West - will be a top 2014 player. Won the smokehouse drill among the DB's.

4. Bosa - manchild. body of a college senior. I thought I was watching Mike D'Andrea out there.

5. Price - future OG. Big kid, strong.

6. Barker - big arm. Good mobility. Thought he was the best QB there.

7. Henderson - 1a at QB. I would take him or Barker and be happy. Threw a nice ball.

8. Allen - Quick, precise routes, cuts on a dime and almost won the smokehouse. I would take him.

9. Ryan Timmons - WR from Kentucky won the smokehouse for the WR's and then the overall win. Can't remember him on the field, might have been on the other side, but he's quick.

10. Next year they need to write last names on shirts. Tough to figure out who most of the kids are.

11. There was a WR, #53, had a bit of a mohawk, looked very good. No clue who he was.

12. Joey Duckworth - Looked good. Can really spin the ball. Not too far behind Barker and Henderson, if at all.

13. Townsend - was booming the ball across the field, even into a strong wind. Big hangtime, looked like he could boot one over the scoreboard.

That's good to hear. Punting over the past few years hasn't been the weapon it was when we had Glass and Trepasso booming the ball early in JT's tenure. I remember Trepasso's punting playing a huge role in the '06 Texas game as he continually pinned them deep in their own territory. That's a nice luxury to have...

These two stood out the most for me as well, especially Artavis. He's rather raw in coverage but his athleticism and closing speed is outstanding.

The only thing that stopped him as a receiver was his hands. Needs to shore that up a bit but the potential is obvious.

Was it just me, or did it seem like Shelton tried using pure speed to create separation? I thought he dropped a couple as well.

As for Devon Allen, he used routes to create separation and had good hands.

I thought Braxton Berrios looked pretty good too.

Shelton Gibson flashes immediately with his burst off the line but he lacks top end speed. His hands also need some work. Special athlete in the first 10 yds but a work in progress at receiver.

Allen is the opposite, avg quickness but very nice straight line speed. He also has much stronger hands and is much more of a technician. Allen is a few inches taller than Gibson and while he is not particularly muscular he is more solid than Gibson.

Braxton Berrios, #62, did a great job out there. He looked about 5'11" 180 and would be a fine slot receiver. Good speed, better quickness, great hands and route running.

Billy price has been working in the weight room since the Nike camp in May. He is getting big in a great way. Will be a great athlete for either side of the ball.

Bosa was his typical athletic self, though he looked a little laid back at times.

Kizer struggled a lot with everything but the deep ball. Barker was the best QB out there and had his moments. Henderson just didn't have much behind his throws.

Watkins did nicely at receiver. I don't think he is OSU material there but he's such a natural athlete that I really want to track him on defense this year.

The best athlete was Artavious Scott who could not be covered at receiver (though his hands need work). The coaches flipped him to defense where he was raw but his potential was tremendous. His technique is raw but his athleticism and closing speed are elite.

I know this kid but can't place him. Who is standing on the right side, next to snodgrass?

Cleats kicked up turf once again at Ohio Stadium last night.
The Ohio State coaching staff, led by Urban Meyer, was at work on the sideline, and fans in scarlet and gray filed in to watch the action. But there was no counterpart to Meyer on the opposite sideline, fans only sat in the west end of the stadium, and those cleats were worn by high-school players during practice drills.
Ohio Stadium played host to its first Friday Night Lights yesterday. The event, which Meyer first conducted seven years ago at the University of Florida, is a football camp for high-school players in 10th through 12th grades. Although any players can pay to attend the one-night camp, certain big-name recruits are invited.Meyer said he had used the camp at Florida as a way to stand out from what other universities offer.
?Just to do something different, give campers a game-like atmosphere in the stadium,? he said. ?It?s only a couple hours, but we?re going to give them a little feel for what college football is all about.?

Campers take in the action at Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights debuted in Columbus last night, as a crowd of about 1,000 looked on. Friday Night Lights is an event that was first started by Urban Meyer, Mark Pantoni, and the rest of his staff at Florida. It attracted many of the nation's top recruits to Gainesville and became a large role in recruiting. Several schools have now integrated the idea into their recruitment plan.
Last night was also the first time that the new scoreboard was able to be shown at the 'Shoe. It is now much larger and consists of a full high definition screen. The Ohio State logo will still sit at the top of the scoreboard but was not yet placed back to its original spot. During the event, the new scoreboard was used to display many highlights of the last ten years of "The Game" against the Wolverines. Their was two sequences in between action where the players were collected at midfield and instructed to watch the highlights for a period of time.

Some quick notes:

- Comments: bottom of the page, click 'comments' to expand box to type your thoughts

- URL: jwinslow.com is the home for my photos now. Fotki is in financial trouble (I'm not deleting the old galleries, but they might disappear), so I remade them here.

- Ohio State is its own category, it is separate from sports (which is where freelance jobs and high school games will appear)

- It's still under construction
