Fred Davis (official thread)

methomps...time will tell on that...

but promising one thing to a kid and delivering another is the old bait and switch.....

that word gets around and could be a real, real, real problem for pc&co....

just my two bits...

jt on the other hand.....under promises and over delivers....

dihard, I certainly wouldn't be happy if that were the case. However, the only info I have heard is that Davis approached the coaching staff about moving to TE. I'm not interested in addressing what PC may or may not have said in recruiting Davis until/unless I actually hear that Davis is upset. So far the only noise over this is coming from Buckeyes, and many of them are doing it for reasons that do not include general concern for FD's well-being/happiness

Man, I can't believe the hard feelings that this has brought on. Seriously, FD could be a monster of a tight end. It might be the best move for him, could be the difference between a couple million in the league and playing for the love of the game in Canada. I just though it was ironic that he's playing TE now when he made the statement about not wanting to spend his career blocking. I didn't mean to spark this "love in."

The problem that I have with this is that it would seem to contradict FD's comment about coming to OSU and blocking. The kid must realize that a TE has bigger blocking responsibilities than a WR does, right? I'm not necessarily doubting your "info" but there is a contradiction. One doesn't say this about OSU

"They're near my hometown, so they'll probably take care of me if I went there, but what's the reason to play there? To block?"
and then ask to be moved to TE.

I still wish FD good luck. I still think he is far from being a man since a man wouldn't leave town in the "middle of the night" like he did. His leaving for USC, the way that he did it, spoke volumes about his character, and frankly we don't need that on our team. However, I do hope that we meet in a bowl game and he does get a nice clean hard hit from one of our defensive players.

gee....imagine a kid....wanting early playing time anyway possible....hence...a switch to tight end....thats perfectly logical..

problem is petey has promised this way too often the past few years....hence my #1 guy...as a wr...not a te...

i also see byers is not slated to start either...

this will be a HUGE,HUGE,HUGE, problem in a year or two for the usc staff....i cant even imagine to describe how enormous this problem could be....

byers would probably start if he wasn't having difficulties with the QB-center exchange.

buckiprof, when I read that quote I get the sense that Fred wasa saying more about his view of the OSU offense as heavy run offense (or at least an offense that had trouble airing it out consistently). I don't really see it as him saying that he isnt interested in blocking.

Hey, folks...why all of the hard feelings for Freddy? tOSU doesn't need him, anyway (neither does USC, for that matter.) I think that being switched to TE might be a wise career move for him. Just look at what Kellen Windblow got from the Browns as a contract. I wish him well (Freddy, that is...Windblow can go to hell). I think that it would be a real classy move to send Freddy a tape of Windblow, the "greatest" TE to ever put on a football uniform, in his debut vs. the Titans. Maybe Freddy can learn how to block by watching Kellen on that one downfield play. You gotta admit...he really "covered" the field on that play! Yes, let's help Freddy out.

When you follow recruiting closely you get to see a few of these ironies....this case reminds me a little bit of Prescott Burgess and the promises from the Meatchicken coaches to let him play safety.

It'd be shameless for our coaches to ever bring stuff like this up (I think you should sell your school not trash the other teams), but I hope that some potential recruits are paying attention.

Here is a comment from Coach Rios on Bucknuts about FD. Sounds like he really does not want to play TE. But when you are Petey's #1 guy you will do anything for Petey. I agree with another poster about how you going to keep all these guys happy when you have only one ball for them to all share.

Here is Coach Rios comments:

"Oh, to be a true Buckeye fan! I don't have an "I told you so" for Fred and those of you who betray the kid as a "me" person don't have a clue. The only thing you know is that he didn't choose OSU and that you are still bitter. Fred and every other kid in America needs to be able to make a decision on their own and for themselves, not for you, me, their mom or anyone else. Fred did just that. Heck, his final 3 choices were the past 3 National Champions. I would like to see him more often in Columbus too, but that is not the case. Fred was home right before fall camp and he doesn't look like a USC or OSU TE. He was 232 when he reported and he still doesn't have an ounce of fat on his body. FWIW, last time we spoke (on the 11th) he was not real interested in the talk about moving him to TE so I don't know what is going on right now. The USC coaches were telling him that he was their best blocking wideout and were already talking about the move a week ago or so. If they're planning to use him like Miami did Winslow, then there might be some appeal, but I don't know. I can't and won't say anymore about it . . . "

Here is what Buckitall said:

" the next big thing at tight end" ?!?!?! I'm having trouble remembering "the last big thing at tight end" for usc. Anyone?

I would also like to point out some things that I find funny, when hearing some usc posters brag about their team and how they will use their abundant weapons.
On the subject of:
1.4 rb's getting the ball- USC's offense uses multiple rb's in different formations and at times split out wide.

2.their wr's getting the ball enough to stay happy- USC runs alot of 4 and 5 wr sets that give all the wr's a taste of playing time.

3.tight ends/f. davis getting used in the game- USC went from being absolutely loaded at tight end with athletic pass catching receivers to f. davis giving them something they didn't have at that position!? So with their new athletic tight ends, they'll use them in the passing game even more this year.

Could someone tell me how 6 wr's,3-4 rb's, 3-5 te's are going to be used in a way that keeps them happy, helps the team win, and will produce personal #'s that should have an award winner at each position?

those of you who betray the kid as a "me" person don't have a clue.
Fred's public statements and actions speak for themselves. I suppose that it is possible that the "real" Fred Davis is different from the "public" Fred Davis, but the fans can only go by what they read, hear, and see.

Fred and every other kid in America needs to be able to make a decision on their own and for themselves, not for you, me, their mom or anyone else. Fred did just that.
Isn't that statement simply a justification of a "me first" attitude? Don't some recruits, like Ted Ginn, Jr. for example, consider family, friends, coaches, etc. when making their decisions? I applaud Coach Rios for attempting to protect his former player, but ultimately it is difficult to defend Fred's conduct surrounding his recruitment.

I don't see Buckeye fans trashing other recruits for leaving the state (at least not to such a great extent), so there must be something unique in the case of Fred Davis.

The above being said, I don't think that there is any need to denigrate Fred Davis or wish him ill. He made his choice, for whatever reason and with whatever result, and now it's over and done. Best just to put him out of your mind, and concentrate on the future of Buckeye football, which is bright, and will remain bright as long as JT is in charge.

Burgess asked to play LB once he got to scUM, just ask Bret

Fred Davis wanted to be a Trojan. No matter what his reasons were that's the one fact we all have to go back to. No matter what lies people think Petey told him he made the decision that he thought was best for him. Could he have handled the process better? Absolutely. I respect Coach Rios for standing by his player but he deserved better from Fred and that has nothing to do with Fred picking USC. Taking shots at Ohio State's offense and saying he was bored at Buckeye home games wasn't necessary either. Like LJB said, I don't wish the kid any harm but I doubt I will ever root for him to do well either. He's not a Buckeye and we're not scheduled to play USC this year so I'm not really concerned about him. Everything happens for a reason. I'm more worried about who we got(Dukes and Lyons) than who we didn't get.

I find myself comparing, and contrasting FD, and Mark Sanchez. USC got solid gold with Sanchez. I of corse could be wrong but FD may have made the worst choice of his entire life at the age of 17.

I also wish Ashland buck hadn't posted he hoped some OSU player would be so classless, and low life as to on purpose take a 15 yard penality to realy hurt someone. Maybe Ashland thought it was cool to watch the Robert Renolds choking scene 100,000 time on ESPN, good for the program, fun to watch...

The dumbest thing I ever read on Buckeye Planet!

The humor of this thread is priceless

FD chose to attend USC 6 freakin months ago guys. For christ sake get over it and enjoy the success the 2004 football team will have and all the other positives that will come with that.

btw What's up with skip loader(aka coach yahoos) and his claiming he had a conversation with FD on August 11th where FD said he was very unhappy with the prospects of trying out at TE? Hopefully you will ban that chronic liar.

Good Day!

note: forward all replies to osugrad.
