France, The french, and Disney.

The KSB

4-4-11/11-5-11
I live about an hour outside of France, about four hours outside of Paris (five hours if you're driving with two little girls). For the last month I've been to France on several excursions. The first, I spent several days in Paris for New Years. The second, I took my daughters to Disneyland Paris for my last weekend before I head over to see my old pal 'stan. I seriously belive the french have gotten a bad, undeserved reputation. I absolutely love traveling France, and the French in general. I have found them to be direct, but not rude. I suppose the directness could be mistaken for rudeness, but it's a quality I appreciate. Plus, if you think the French are rude, you should spend some time with the german military. Below are a few of my thoughts.

Driving in Paris is war! Unlike the french military, parisian drivers never surrender. A word of advice is avoid driving in Paris at all costs. They are the craziest drivers I have ever seen. Fortunately the Paris Metro is excellent. One of the best I've ever been on. I think a two day pass cost us about 20 euro for the family. If you do some research ahead of time you can get deals on them.

Paris in general is the most remarkable city I've ever been to. It may very well be the most american friendly city on the european continent. American food is widely available. I know the availability of american food would not be a selling point for most travelers, but I've been living among the germans for six months now and there is only so much schnitzel I can handle. If french cuisine is on your mind, the french food in Paris is fantastic! The street food is fantastic. The food in general is fantastic. We walked by the Louvre but didn't go in. The line was too long. However, the grounds outside of the Louvre are worth exploring. We went to several other museums and loved them. Just walking the streets was impressive. The french really do arcitecture right. We went to Notre Dame de Paris. Unlike the University of Notre Dame, it has not faded with time. I was disappointed with the noteable lack of hunchbacks though. There were a lot of gypse con artists outside though. After about a half an hour I saw the french police desend upon them. They rounded them all up, roughly I might add, and carted them off. One of the locals told me they do this every day almost. You have to hand it to the gypses, they are gluttons for punishment. The Eiffel tower was nice. It is much better seeing it in person. I wouldn't say it was the highlight of our trip, but certainly worth taking a look when you are there. That's pretty much wraps up our first trip there.

We did Disney Paris on a seperate trip. It was pretty good. It's not nearly the size of Disney world in Florida. I've never been to Disneyland in California so I can't compare. Disney Paris isn't worth scheduling a whole trip around, but would make a great side trip while in Paris. We went during the week at a very non-tourist time so we didn't have to deal with any lines. We had a blast. I don't really have much to write on it though. Just FYI.

Thanks for the write up KSB!! We were thinking about going to EuroDisney in June but changed that to a trip to Italy. Our friends that went had a grand time and recommended it as well. I still want to make it to Aachen like I mentioned before. Maybe the summer after though my wife is pushing for Monte Negro.
If you ever get the opportunity hit up Regensburg. It's about an hour south of us. It wasn't bombed out in WWII and is my favorite place in Germany so far.

Like I said EuroDisney was fun. But, we went at a time when it was about as uncrowded as it could be. The parking lot was nearly empty. I have a feeling that if you go on a weekend during tourist season I think it would be jam packed. I might be heading out to Aachen by the end of this weekend. I'll definately hit up Regensburg post deployment.

Regensburg now holds a full Ironman there...the course looks fantastic. If I ever do an Ironman in Europe, it'll likely be there or Wales.

Like KSB I have enjoyed traveling in France. Unlike England where you had to put effort into finding a good meal, you couldn't buy a bad meal in France.

We took a day to go to Mount St. Michele and ended up with a couple of hours left at the end of the trip. Since we were going to the Normandy landing sites we headed off to reconnoiter for the next day. We stopped for gas in a village and I cranked up my high school (read horse shit) French to try and get some directions. Nope the attendant didn't Parles Anglais. I couldn't remember the word for beach and he kept shrugging his shoulders. Finally I put together, "Mon oncle arrive dan les cote de Normandie, siess June quatre quatre."

At that the attendant flew into action, pulling out maps, making phone calls, writing it all down and I had my tour of the battlefield, a good auberge to stay in and all kinds of good places to eat. The gratitude was obvious.

I've heard the French hate EuroDisney, I'd wager tourists visit more than anything

KSB, Do you have any trouble with the German economy or lack there of service? The companies have all the rights over the customer here. The customer is always wrong in Germany.

Our internet was down for 2 weeks cause the company cut the cable. Called for reimbursement and they said "prove it". I had called everyday to tell them it was still down, at first they didn't even believe me cause tests came back good on their end. To send a tech to our house was going to cost 50 euro if it was our problem.

Same thing with the phone service. They fuck up and tell me to fuck off.

Friend had the same thing with car rental.

I have more stories but too long to post. I miss my freedoms.

American customer service does suck.
Imagine that combined with not being allowed out of a contract so you have no recourse whatsoever and if you fail to pay it's an instant court order to pay or you get arrested and as a bonus you have to pay court costs of 500 euro.

when we lived in England, we took a weekend trip to Paris. We too expected the people to be rude to us, but everyone was very pleasant. I think a big thing is to try and speak the language, or at least make an effort. If they saw we were trying, they were much more helpful. There happened to be another table at a restaurant with Americans at it and they were loud and making no effort, and their service was terrible compared to ours while we were sitting there.

in regards to bad food in England, I thought it got a bad rap. I quite enjoyed it. Of course, I'm a chef so I was working in a nice restaurant over there too. That may have had something to do with it.
