Former USC coach Tim Floyd

USC trying to save football and Petey... so they offer up basketball

As expected. So now the NCAA investigators should question him, since he's no longer a part of the USC program. I'm wondering whether USC will have him sign some sort of non-disclosure agreement in order to try to limit what he says, both publicly and privately.

It also makes me wonder if the NCAA has talked to Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, regarding what was going on in the football program a while back.

Not much of a sacrifice. The basketball program never has been much or done much. Even Mayo only was able to lead them to a first round loss in the NCAA tournament.

That's USC's M.O., isn't it? I'd expect exactly that to happen. Which, of course, begs the question--why, if USC has nothing to hide from the NCAA, does it go to such lengths to keep quiet everyone who has been in and/or around the football and basketball programs for the past ten or so years?

Former USC basketball coach Tim Floyd says NCAA advised him to get an attorney
Floyd, who resigned from USC in June, says he was abandoned by Athletic Director Mike Garrett after investigations of Trojans' football and basketball programs intensified.

Tim Floyd might like to coach college basketball again. He likes teaching the game, he said. He loves the practice time, the chance to see a team come together.

Floyd also said he still loves USC, that he admires football Coach Pete Carroll, that he hoped new basketball Coach Kevin O'Neill is given a fair chance to succeed because, he said, O'Neill is "a good man."

But Floyd isn't so crazy about somebody else.

He is not happy with USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett.

In his first interview with the Los Angeles media since he quit as USC's basketball coach last June, Floyd told of feeling betrayed by Garrett beginning in July of 2008 when, Floyd said, during a telephone conversation with NCAA investigator, LuAnn Humphrey, it was suggested to Floyd he needed legal counsel.

"She told me I needed to get an attorney," Floyd said. "I said I hadn't done anything wrong. She said, 'No, you need to get an attorney.' "

Floyd said that Humphrey told him the NCAA investigations involving Trojans football player Reggie Bush and basketball player O.J. Mayo were moving into the area of USC's possible lack of institutional control.

When Floyd told Humphrey he hadn't done anything wrong and that he didn't need an attorney, Floyd said Humphrey told him, "You need to think about the Ohio State situation."

Floyd said when he asked what that meant, Humphrey told Floyd to think about how when there were questions about Ohio State football player Maurice Clarrett, it was the Ohio State basketball program under Jim O'Brien that eventually suffered severe NCAA sanctions with O'Brien getting fired.

It was then, Floyd said, when he felt that Garrett abandoned him.

I wondered if his "love" for USC and his admiration for Petey is strong enough that he might now want to give a deposition to the NCAA out what he knows about the entire USC athletic program which is under the person who gave him his walking papers.

UTEP hires Tim Floyd as basketball coach - College Basketball - Rivals.com

EL PASO, Texas (AP)—Tim Floyd is coming back to El Paso and couldn’t be happier about returning to the school that gave him his first coaching job more than 30 years ago.

The former USC coach and one-time assistant to former Miners coach Don Haskins was introduced Tuesday afternoon as the fifth coach to lead UTEP since Haskins retired in 1999.

“I came here at 22 years old and I didn’t know anything about the game of basketball,” the 56-year-old coach said. “Coach Haskins gave me an opportunity when I didn’t deserve one.”

Floyd, who most recently has been an assistant for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets, left USC after the 2009 season amid allegations of recruiting violations involving player O.J. Mayo.

Floyd said Tuesday that his departure from USC was “not an admission of guilt.”

“I chose not to try my case in the media,” Floyd said of the ongoing NCAA probe. “I left because of lack of support.”

Floyd replaces Tony Barbee, who left UTEP last week to take the head job at Auburn. Barbee led UTEP to the NCAA tournament, but the Miners lost in the first round to Butler.

UTEP athletic director Bob Stull said he called Floyd immediately after Barbee made the move to Auburn.

“In that first phone call, he said he was definitely interested,” Stull said. Floyd committed to the job in an early morning phone call Tuesday, Stull said.

Details about his contract were not released. Floyd said his more immediate focus was on getting to work.
