Former LSU WR Xavier Carter

I saw him win the 100 and 400 a week ago or so. I'm not sure how well he's been doing on the football field, but from what I saw he should hae a damn good career on the track. That boy can fly

Well time to get that ranking of fastest college football teams re-sorted.

how are the folks in Baton Rouge handling this I wonder?
Seems like the general sentiment here is that his departure (from football) is not a bad thing - and good for Xavier himself.

Noteworthy --

Carter was much more successful on the track. A 10-time All-American, earlier this month he became the first man to win four events at the NCAA meet since the legendary Jesse Owens in 1936.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Former Tiger Xavier Carter clocked the second fastest 200-meter time in the history of the world Tuesday with a scorching 19.63 performance at the Athletissima 2006.
Running out of lane eight, Carter blew by the field down the straightaway to earn his second professional victory in as many tries.
The sizzling run is the fastest in the world this season and has only ever been bettered by Michael Johnson who established the world-record time of 19.32 at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
The time, a personal best by an astounding .39 seconds, also shattered the meet record of 19.85 set by four-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon in 1996.
“That was a big personal best for Xavier,” said Shaver. “The conditions here were ideal and I think Xavier and the rest of the field took advantage of that.”
In a field that included several of the world’s best, four athletes posted sub-20 second performances as Carter knocked off runner-up, Tyson Gay (19.70), World junior record holder, Usain Boldt (19.88), and World silver medalist, Wallace Spearmon (19.90).
“With the competition in the field this race was really being built up before we got here,” said Shaver. “But Xavier has done a good job of adjusting to this environment and getting himself ready to run. I told him before the race, ‘You need to run this race just like you run any other race.’ Fortunately he was able to relax and do that.”
Also competing Tuesday were former Tigers Walter Davis and Kelly Willie and former Lady Tiger Lolo Jones.
Davis picked up a third-place finish in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 57-1, while Willie and Jones turned in a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 100 meters (10.13) and 100 hurdles (12.68), respectively.
Up next, Carter will travel to Rome on Friday for the Golden Gala where he is slated to go head-to-head with Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner in the 400 meters.

An amazing time and an amazing race... there are only seven performances under 20 seconds this year and four were in that race. The test for Xavier will be if he can run multiple races under 19.80 seconds... only two people have done that, Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis. If Xavier wants to break the 200m record, which I'm sure he does, he will need to be consistent then have another huge performance. Johnson's record was definitely one of those earth-shattering ones when he ran it.

All-Time 200m Performances under 19.80 (without Xavier's performance)

Catfish Biff's - You might have some sort of Javascript in your post that is causing the print dialog to open automatically. At first I thought my browser was flipping out but I noticed it was only in this thread. You may want to take a look at that. I imagine you took the story from the printing format on LSU's site and I saw that the print dialog opens automatically there also. Just an FYI.

Good call. I just edited his post and removed the extraneous HTML/JavaScript that was in there.

News like this always makes me rethink all the recruiting hype it is so easy to get caught up in. Every year we end up looking at kids who will make or break our program if they come to OSU - all based on experts rankings.

But take a look at Scout's top recruits from 2004:

#1 Jeff Byers - sat out last season with an injured hip. Would not be at all surprised to see him come back strong, but lower body injuries for big men don't always work out that way. Certainly not the second coming of Orlando Pace we were all anticipating.

#2 Willie Williams - nuff said.

#9 Early Doucet - Generally receivers make it into the line up as quickly as any other position. But after two season the #1 WR prospect in the nation had still not cracked the starting lineup at LSU.

#10 Xavier Lee - Was considering a transfer from FSU last December even though he has already burnt his RS. Not what you expect to read about a QB prospect heading into their third season if things were working according to plan.

#11 Fred Davis - I expect Fred to be a great TE at USC, but that is a bit off from being Petey's go to WR.

#15 Xavier Carter - Another kid who wont be leading LSU to an NC anytime soon.

Not to say the rankings are worthless (there is a kid named Ginn on there somewhere) but it is a long way between being a five star recruit and having your number retired.
