Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Devastating. I was at St. X during the bitterest of years against Colerain when a rivalry sprouted up from nothing - never thought I'd be a fan. But KC is just one of those guys you hate when he's on the other side but love even more when he's your guy. I'm sitting here trying to think of anyone from any walk of life who matches the man's visible intensity and passion for life and his chosen field and I'm drawing a blank. Tack onto that the ridiculous results he's produced, and this one's definitely going to hurt. Hope he finds success at the only level he hasn't already, and perhaps decides to finish off his career back home when the time's right.

whaaaaa? coombs just doesnt seem like the type who would mesh well with professional athletes but what the h3ll do I know

He’s not.
He is a molder of young people who want to be coached in life and motivated each day. That is NOT your average NFL player. If this is true this is a mistake on Coombs’ part unless he is looking for a major pay increase for a few years before retiring.
This one is a head scratcher.

Re: Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs will make $500,000 this year (i.e. 2017).

There are also bonuses for various team achievements.
  • An 8.5 percent base salary supplemental compensation for winning the Big Ten East Division at the coach's then-current rate.
  • A 4.25 percent base salary supplemental compensation for winning the Big Ten Championship at the coach's then-current rate.
  • Participation in a College Football Playoff postseason game means 17 percent base salary additional compensation at the coach's then-current rate.
  • Participation in non-College Football Playoff bowl game and nine-win season: 4.25 percent of base salary bonus at the coach's then-current rate.
  • Participation in semifinals (but not finals) of College Football Playoff: 21.25 percent base salary additional compensation at the coach's then-current rate.
  • If Ohio State wins in the College Football Playoff semifinal, Schiano is not entitled to his 21.25 percent additional base salary compensation. Instead, he receives an additional 25.5 percent base salary compensation at the coach's then-current rate.

Coombs started his college career at UC under Brian Kelly in the 2006 International Bowl. Coombs declined an opportunity to go with Kelly to Notre Dame and stayed at UC with Butch Jones, before accepting the position under Meyer at OSU. Coombs spent five seasons at UC, including three years as associate head coach in addition to being defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator.
Coombs completed his sixth season as coach of the OSU cornerbacks and became the Buckeyes' special teams coordinator in February of 2013. He has been responsible for OSU's recruiting effort in the Cincinnati area and elsewhere.

Just sayin': He's the last assistant football coach that I would have expected to leave. If in fact he is leaving, it can't be just about more money; there has to be some more to the story.

Not me.

The chance to get off the road recruiting trail to focus all of his energy on coaching would be extremely appealing to someone of his age.

The only thing I can think of is that he is at the end of the career so he figures, hey I haven't tried this NFL thing yet let's see what it's like before I retire

Re: Coombs is a lifelong Ohioan. He grew up in Colerain, graduated from Colerain High School in 1979 and from the University of Dayton in 1983, and has a master’s degree from Wright State (1996).
Coombs and his wife, Holly, are the parents of three grown children: son Brayden played collegiately at Miami (Ohio) and is currently on staff with the Cincinnati Bengals; daughter Cortney played soccer at Ball State; and son Dylan is in the Lindner Honors Plus business program at the University of Cincinnati.
Children: Sons, Brayden (wife is Alex) and Dylan (wife is Ciara); daughter, Cortney (husband is Rob); five grandchildren: Harper, Avery, Gibson, Cameron and Austin.

He's only 56 years old, and I always thought he enjoyed interacting with the high school kids (i.e. he was the recruiting coordinator). In addition, I can't see him wanting to move 2 states away from his children and grandchildren (unles it is some really big career advancement/promotion).

You listed a lot of facts about Coach Coombs, but nothing that really speaks to a reason for staying or leaving.

I'm seeing a lot of people projecting what they think they would do in CC's position. I see a lot of that in recruiting, too. Sometimes we need to take a step back and realize these people have their own reasons for things.
