Combs shouldn’t be fired for what he did with the Oregon game plan but what he didn’t do from January to August.

2014 from day one was better than the shit show we’ve seen so far. At least dudes were actually in the right position. 2021 looks like an unholy mix of dudes with little game time experience and a coordinator who has no idea what the fuck he’s doing.I mean it was a 3-8 Indiana team with someone named Zander Diamont at QB. Diamont was their backup. Don't care if Barry Sanders was their RB, it was a pathetic performance.
All I'm saying is that defense was far from good most of 2014. Only had 4 regular season games in which they held teams below 20 points. One was a comical Kent State team and another was Rutgers. Still time for guys to step up and things come together to be an ok defense.

The defense has had problems since 2012. Have you forgotten all the casuals screaming to fire Fickell annually?2014 from day one was better than the shit show we’ve seen so far. I think there are talent reasons they aren't fielding Jordan Fuller / Vonn Bell at safety (especially without Proctor) or great at LB (recruiting has been fairly good not great there).Inexperienced young guys or not, I'd like to see what Hafley or someone like him would be able to do with this group. I honestly don't think it's the players (for the most part). Wouldn't it be statistically unlikely for a whole team and backups to all (most, anyway) grossly underachieve? That's scheme and coaching.
I agree there needs to be a change with the defense. Coombs probably should not be the DC. But this wasn't an unranked team we lost to.

But there should be some Tyvis Powell types at 1-2 spots in the back seven.
There are no excuses to be less than average at most slots. They can certainly execute at an Iowa level on defense. They are executing at an Alex Grinch OU level.
Conversely certain pressures tends to expose your secondaires man coverage ability.
Sending additional bodies doesn't just fix the issues at hand.
I'd agree - but our CB's I'm very confident can hold their own. That's the area that gets the most responsibility in those situations.
Blitzing, in general, does two things that would greatly impact this defense; gets our LBs more into zone as opposed to man, which they've for the most part shown no ability to do man nor should they, and decreases the amount of time before pass which relieves our now even shorter safeties situation.
Additionally, with our LB's continuing to struggle, their lives are much easier when they can chase after the QB then sitting back and getting picked apart. Blitzing doesn't solve everything, but when you blitz only twice against Minnesota and I don't know how much against Oregon but it wasn't much.....that ain't enough.
Cincy was a top 30 offense that year and even then we didn’t give up 30. I’d bet significant cash this Oregon squad doesn’t even finish Top 50 this year. You must not remember the Cincinnati game that year.
You could drop that game in 2020 and never know the difference.
The only difference is they didn't score 3td's on THE SAME FREAKIN' PLAY.
