i’ll post it againI did read it and pointed out that your post was disingenuous...like you’re being now.
not sure what is disingenuous about this.. i pretty clearly call out the lack of adjustments all year after half time.. which you agreed with when i said “we were AWAESOME in the first half but in the 2nd half we didn’t play so well”The biggest thing that worries/d me about Coombs is coming out of half time.... 0 adjustments all year... Hafely felt like he came out with an entirely different scheme at half time to adjust. Coombs ... I saw nothing all year and that a huge red flag
Because your post was clearly insinuating that the defense was getting torched in the first half of games when that clearly wasn’t the case. You also said there were zero adjustments all year which is once again a lie. Again, there’s plenty to critique with Coombs and the defense without resorting to making shit up.i’ll post it again

dude chill with this shit .. saying i’m lying? we’re both armchair DCing this shit.. you call it how you see it (Coombs is great) I’ll call it how I see it (Coombs has some question marks)Because your post was clearly insinuating that the defense was getting torched in the first half of games when that clearly wasn’t the case. lmao sure thing chiefdude chill with this shit .. saying i’m lying? we’re both armchair DCing this shit.. you call it how you see it (Coombs is great) I’ll call it how I see it (Coombs has some question marks)
again you’re reading something that wasn’t even in my statement.. . Half time adjustments shoudl happen REGARDLESS of what happens in the first half.. great we shut them out the first half ... to think that the other offensive staff goes into the locker room and say “lets do the same shit that didn’t work in the first half” is not happening these guys are paid to much. ..
again regardless of the first half... adjustments need to be made the first half ...
I mean it’s silly how quickly we’re throwing coaches under the bus considering how much of an asterisk this season is. If this was a 2015 type situation where Coombs was getting torched with Young, Fuller, Arnette, and Okudah back I’d be calling for his head like I was calling for Warriner and Beck’s. I mean I could just as well throw Day under the bus for somehow only mustering 24 points and less than 400 total yards against the worst defense Saban’s ever fielded. But that would be really fucking dumb because, like the defense, the offense has been dealing with an incredibly fucked up year with injuries, lack of games, etc. Like goddamn people let a coach have a full roster and season in a non-fucked up year before calling them trash lol.I see we're getting a little chippy in the off season. A last game butt whooping will do that
I agree... there are some really troubling signs. Having Proctor/Wade/Banks should not have produced the 5th worst passing defense in the country. What's even more troubling is this wasnt just a 1 or 2 game issue. It happened multiple times and it reminds me a lot of 2018 with the big plays we used to give up.Regardless of the circumstances, Coombs was embarrassed by Bama and Sarkisian.
And like Beck/Warinner before him, if it is the problem it appears to be (although we will be unfortunate enough to see glimmers here and there) it won’t really rear its ugly head again until we play another Bama-level team. The good news is that doesn’t happen very often, the bad news is that’s what’s required to win a championship.
I don’t think the question is can he be a competent coordinator; we’re going to beat 90% of the teams on the schedule just based on talent alone. The question is can he be elite.
He failed pretty badly in his first go around. Maybe there were mitigating circumstances, but the adjustments were basically non-existent throughout the game in personnel or scheme, which is the most concerning thing.
Maybe he didn’t have many options, but could it have really been much worse trying literally anything else? Ohio State got exactly one stop in the game on a forced turnover prior to Bama shutting it down to grind clock.
So, say we generally cruise through the regular season next year with minimal bumps in the road but with glimmers of concern Beck/Warinner 2015-style, but then get completely embarrassed in the post season again.
Does Coombs get fired on the spot to avoid another 2016 Clemson (or 2020 Bama) level embarrassment the next year?
Point being, in its current iteration with the talent and offense, you can float by as the DC at Ohio State not being great while still winning 90% of games.
However, when there are warning signs that your coordinator might not be elite—like, say, getting completely embarrassed by an elite opponent—you’re going to throw multiple seasons away (even if you literally have the best talent in college football history on your team like Beck/Warinner did for OSU in ‘15, and—although it wasn’t quite as elite—‘16) if you give the coordinator the benefit of doubt because they don’t look as awful against regular opponents.
Maybe Coombs turns it around with a full offseason and better depth in the secondary, but there are some serious warning signs here, and we likely won’t really know how deep they go until the post season next year.
As I read this, the blame, if any, has to be on Day, not Coombs. Day reviews the defensive plan and has the final say on execution. Evidently this is the Ohio State culture, that from Woody thru Day, the head coach makes the final call, not the OC or the DC, the head coach.Based on interviews like this, I think Day disagrees that Coombs doesn’t have to run Hafley’s system.

Hopefully we just tell Kerry "Do whatever you want to fix our issues".As I read this, the blame, if any, has to be on Day, not Coombs. Coombs is a valuable recruiter and his coaching skills seem to me to be reflected in the number of DBs from Ohio State who have gone on to the NFL and been successful. Compare that with the number from, oh let’s say our principal rival.
Although I totally agree and understand the logic, the other problem is according to Pro Football Focus Tuf had 4 pressures this season. The lack of pressures and sacks from the LB unit this season was embarrassing if you look at PFF. I know Zack Smith is not popular around here, but his podcast is a wealth of info and the guy knows the game. He has been riding Tuf all year too and thinks it is absurd that Browning was not playing Mike. I feel the same way, Browning is a natural Mike and could have been a hell of a M as seen in the Michigan State game where he graded out the highest defensive player on the field that game by PFF.One in game adjustment I know I was thinking about regarding Borland; if you are stuck with a guy on the field, for whatever reason, and you know he can't cover then he may as well blitz. He's useless dropping back, not his fault...he simply isn't athletic enough to cover people at that level so adapt to what he can do for you and send him. Almost everytime. You have fuck all to lose and maybe something to gain. Their QB, like all QB's, is a different guy under pressure.
I'd rather see, another, long Bama TD because the blitz didn't quite get there than see Tuf Borland doing his best impersonation of me chasing the fucking Heisman winner (again).

That is where he played before and where he played the Michigan State game. For me, there isn't a ton of difference between the three Lbs positions, and Browning is a big nasty in the middle. Size and range along with his speed make him a nasty in the middle IMHO. Smith thinks the same. I bet in the NFL if Baron gets a shot it will be a Mike. I do not believe he was moved "because he didn't have instincts for the position". The instincts are the same whether you are playing M S or W. I believe they moved Browning to make room for Tuf because he can't play S or W for obvious reasons. How do you know Baron is a natural Mike? Isn't that where he started his career here but got moved because he didn't show the necessary instincts for the position?
I didn't think that Browning had a definite position. I envisioned him more in the mold Of an Isaih Simmons from Clemson, he could play LB or on the edge.Although I totally agree and understand the logic, the other problem is according to Pro Football Focus Tuf had 4 pressures this season.
