For the Parents - When did you move the kids from crib to toddler bed?

  • When did you transition your kids from a crib to a toddler bed? my daughter (21 months) climbed out of her crib and fell this morning, so we are setting up her toddler bed tonight/tomorrow. Until this morning we've never seen her try to climb out (video monitor in her room) - but it really doesn't surprise me because of how curious and independent she tries to be.

When they can crawl out of the crib. Just make sure to get rails on the bed. You never enjoy hearing that thud in the middle of the night.

already bought them a few weeks ago while we were out (my wife is always prepared for anything that can happen in the future - pretty sure she has my clothes picked out that i'm wearing in the casket :paranoid:)

Voice of much experience here. We usually move them between 18-24 months, depending on how big they are. The rails didn't work for our youngest, but he's on the bottom bunk with his older brother on the top, so it's not a long drop to the floor. And he pretty much straddles the bed so there's not much risk there. But with him, we had to remove the dresser because he was pulling out the drawers and using them like a ladder to climb it. That was a big thud when it tipped over on him. Fortunately, the damage was minimal.

My son's crib changes into a toddler day bed (front rail comes off) so he can climb in and out of it. We switched it several months ago- he's just over 2 yrs- and put a rail in the front so he won't fall out. He hadn't really tried to climb out of the crib much, but he was tall enough that we figured it wouldn't be much of a challenge if he decided to try.

When my two kids started climbing out is when they got moved. Now you are in for a whole new set of shit. If you think she is going to want to stay in bed, forget it. The independence thing you spoke of, being able to get in and out of ben when she wants to, is something new for them to take advantage of.

    Cribs and beds?

I move them from a cat carrier to a dog carrier when they turn four and then to a dog cage when they turn twelve. Then I euthanize them at 18 before I have to pay for college.
