Lou Holtz Says Notre Dame Would Only Lose Because It Wants to “Preserve Ryan Day's Job,” Believes Fighting Irish Will Win With “Culture”

The back-and-forth between Ryan Day and former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz that started before Ohio State played the Fighting Irish in 2023 continued on Wednesday.

First came a story from the Toledo Blade in which Holtz divulged his thoughts on last year's tiff, where he said the Buckeyes had a problem with the physicality of certain teams and the Fighting Irish's toughness would win them the September matchup. After Ohio State won 17-14 in South Bend, Day fired back, saying "I'd like to know where Lou Holtz is right now" in his postgame interview with NBC.

When asked about that interaction by the Blade, Holtz said he harbors no ill will toward Day.

"Nothing is further from the truth on that. He’s the one who exploded," Holtz said.

But soon after, the 88-year-old took to X with a jab at Ohio State's head man.

An hour later, Holtz released a five-minute video where he gave his full prediction for the game, picking Notre Dame to win due to its "culture."

"I believe the University of Notre Dame will prevail in this football game," Holtz said. "Not because we have the best football team, but I think we have the best culture. Culture will beat talent each and every time."

Lou is purposely goading Ohio State again. He’s trying to get in Ryan’s head. He’s hoping we’ll do what we have in the past which is play trying to prove toughness etc. TBH it might work. Hopefully the coaches just don’t even address him even if we win.

I’ll say this holy shit do these guys talk a lot for a team that hasn’t beat us since the 1930s. Every fucking time they run their mouth and every single time we keep our mouths shut and clap them.

Fuck what I wouldn’t give for another 35-0 half time lead into a blowout win.

He is preaching the same mantra they came out with in the Indiana game leave no doubt. So I don't think he cares about toughness and all that shit he wants to blow them out

Everyone I know says they're rooting for a "good game". Every time I hear that I respond with "fuck that, I got a 'good game' last Friday. I'm done with that, I want a game like the Rose Bowl part 2."

Make them play our damn game. They play the style of defense that can get them hurt too with as much man that they play. Bombs over the top man to JJ and then smash their face in with Henderson and Q.
