Game Thread For the Natty vs Notre Dame, Jan. 20th, 7:30 ET on ESPN

That is not good news for Ohio State.

Actually I'm not so sure that it is bad. SEC teams seem to be on average penalized more than most conferences (I mean ANY conference is penalized more than the Big 10). I know it's a lot to ask, but maybe we will be on the good end of a holding call for the first time since September. Not sure there is much room for them to be worse than the Big 10/ACC crews we have had.

One can dream, anyway.

Eh it’s two northern teams. Their champion also got knocked out by ND.
It's one northern team vs. a northern team that carries the flag for the conference that they see as being "the north".
I have no doubt that most fans of SEC teams are rooting for Notre Dame.
Remember that Notre Dame has rejected the Big Ten's attempts at a hostile take-over (according to Notre Dame, I mean). It's like a modern war of northern aggression - just against another team in the north.
Notre Dame is the lesser of two evils.
Also, if Notre Dame wins, they can say, "We would have beat Notre Dame with our quarterback. We would be national champions." It'll make them feel better.

If we really wanted to be cynical about things, given the publicly Christian expression of many of our players, we could crib off of what ND did to Da U way back in the day and have Christians v. Catholics t-shirts. There's probably still some remnants of Blaine amendment=style fear of "pernicious Romish influence" in the bible belt that we could take advantage of (and no, I'm not really being more than a tiny tiny bit serious).

I do agree that otherwise, we're probably deemed the greater evil to the average Southern football fan as the flag bearer for the BIG, the home state of Grant and Sherman, and a fan base that they encounter more regularly.

Still, I don't really expect official fuckery beyond potential incompetence, which has more often come from the replay booth than the field in match-ups with Southern teams. SEC usually allows a lot of what's called PI in other conferences though, and I'm not sure who that helps more (we throw more but also have more ability to fight off PI and Iggy so ...)

Notre Dame fan here. I think our talent level has been greatly underestimated in these playoffs because we are "a year early"

We will lose just 4 starters on D. And return basically the entire 2 deep on offense minus Leonard and maybe a TE(but its ND we always have a stud TE waiting). The competition particularly on the OL next year will be insane.

WR Jordan Faison is an extremely underrated player 1 to watch out for if ND beats you he'll be a key player

If they continue to play a lot of man, Howard will need to scramble along with some designed runs. Thought he'd break off a few long runs based on some of his KSU highlights and hasn't yet. Now's the time. Ideally you'd also get Treyveon more touches on the perimeter and in jet motion.

Welcome! Thanks for the insight.
But these past few years have taught me not to count any chickens before they've hatched. Just because they're on the team this year doesn't mean they'll be there next year.
Of course, I hope for a Buckeye victory on Monday, but I hope for your sake that Notre Dame can hold onto that depth.

Then we better leave no doubt eh? If anyone’s worried about the refs you’re misplaying your angst lol.

I’m worried about NDs 2002 buckeye like qualities. Their ability to cause turnovers, to create scores on special teams and their tough defense.

Just not worried about the refs.

With that said, I think there’s the potential to do just that. They have a banged up LOS and we are healthy. This is a LOS game and I’d be floored if our DL particularly isn’t a real problem for them.

Keys to the game are as follows I think

1. Play clean with no turnovers and limited penalties. We cannot have drives killed by 10-15 yarders like we did Texas.

2. No special teams issues and no big returns.

3. Protect Will Howard. I don’t think a couple true freshman and Gray can stop these WRs so if Will has time it’ll be hard for ND to keep up.
