Football's a Cold Business at Clemson

OK! I'll bite. Name just one more?

Clemson used Ray as a good PR campaign, so it doesn't look like they gave him the things they did out of a purely humanitarian gesture.

I guess the PR campaign is done. Ray is out.

Taos, I'm surprised you are one of the lemmings you usually ridicule when they follow the media with such blinders.

How could they use Ray as a PR campaign when the situation happened behind the scenes until it became apparent that the NCAA had to be consulted due to the aid he was receiving? What did Clemson actually get out of this? The kid himself got the PR and the huge trust fund. What did Clemson get? The donations came from everywhere...just not Clemson boosters.

If anything, the humanitarian aspect of this situation kept Ray on the team longer than the typical student-athlete. He has made out much better than 99% of the kids who ever receive a scholarship...

EDSBS chimes in

When the coaches met withRay Ray, which they do with all players, it was made clear to him that if he decided to remain at Clemson his scholarship would be provided. That includes a commitment from our Athletic Director that we would give him a graduate assistant position (that would pay for a Masters degree) within the Clemson Athletic Department after he graduated.

Clemson quickly turned it to their advantage. They benefited.
Not saying Ray didn't also. It just seems to me that revoking any scholarship is very sad for the kids. And an abuse. Just sayin'......

Is this covered at all by NCAA rules?

How did they benefit?

Revenue? Publicity? What?

Does that mean tOSU is benefiting from Tyson Gentry since his story and progress is continually updated?

Its been in the national media for almost two years...don't you think the NCAA has covered this by now?

He received a free education, the opportunity to get grad school paid for and 100k to provide for his brother...I'd say he's been given a pretty good situation by Clemson and if he can't be on the football team one more season that's a small price to pay. Cold, maybe, but there's much worse going on.

Clemson has done right by Ray Ray

Like everything else in the Ray Ray McElrathbey saga, the latest chapter started poorly and got better.
Maybe Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden and school officials made it up as they went along over the last few days. Finally (we think), it was announced (if quite clumsily) that the college football player made famous for gaining custody of his younger brother, Fahmarr, has the opportunity next year to work toward a graduate degree while he serves as an assistant in the school's athletic department.
Technically, Bowden did not revoke McElrathbey's scholarship in that McElrathbey is allowed to continue his studies without having to cut large checks to Clemson.
Bowden, however, terminated McElrathbey's Clemson football career by at the very least strongly discouraging the Atlanta native from participating in the program. McElrathbey can keep his full football scholarship until he graduates in August with a sociology degree that will have been impressively gained in just over three years on campus.

Cont...

Pretty cool tidbit...

For example, Virginia football players pitched in when defensive lineman Chris Long shook down his teammates and mailed the money to the Fahmarr fund.

That is a one sided story...

There is more to it and Ray also knows he has zero chance of seeing the field with the two studs returning and 2 freshman coming in.

I agree. I always laugh when some recruit gives a story to a paper and the message board people (usually at a rival school) take 100% of what he says as gospel.

Yeah, teenagers don't lie to the media. :roll1:

Privately, people close to the situation say Bowden didn't have a choice. After injuring his knee, McElrathbey didn't regularly attend his rehabilitation sessions. He vanished for days at a time and didn't respond to telephone calls and text messages from coaches.

"It's like he wasn't even a part of the team," said one person close to the situation who requested anonymity. "There were rules and there were Ray Ray rules. He thumbed his nose at the coaches and they got sick of it. It's a complicated story. Nobody wants to trash the kid. But some of the things he's done here have just been inexcusable. He just wasn't doing the thing he was supposed to do. You can't have rules for one kid and different rules for the other 84 players."

This is why I have to laugh at some of the high and mighty ones that I work with. The ones that think that a NLOI is a contract to stay for four years that should be honored by the player. When I tell them that scholarships are renewed annually and that I went to High School with a guy that started at fullback for two years and, after a coaching change, didn't have his schollie renewed, they give me the I didn't know they could do that look.
* I didn't know you could do that look*

Has tOSU ever signed a player out of high school that just didn't work out, and revoked their scholarship?

If you make grades, go to practice, don't get in trouble will they revoke your scholarship for performance / roster issues?

I've never heard of it happening. I know OSU doesn't oversign recruits, so it's probably more likely in a place like Miami or Clemson.

...and the truth slowly seeps out.

Hey 21,
I think I'm noticing that you have a healthy respect for the Clemson Football program? If so is there a reason?

Eh, its in-state and I've had plenty of contact with their staff. They are great guys and really open their doors to the HS coaches.
