I thought that subject line might get your attention...
If you want to have a little twisted fun, go to Google and type in 'football players arrested' and check out the results. It will give you, in five minutes, a better perspective on NCAA football than ESPN has shown all year.
I stopped counting after the first 30 hits, but here are the programs that had players arrested per Google (as of 1/21/05):
San Jose State, South Florida, Florida, Notre Dame, Kansas State, West Virginia, Oregon State, Iowa State, Texas A&M, Clemson (a couple of top 30 hits for Mr. Bowden's southern gentlemen), NC State, Central Michigan, Arizona, The US Naval Academy, Indiana, Missouri, UNLV, Michigan State, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri Western, Montana, Washington, Miami of Ohio, Colorado...
Given the nature of the Google search engine, some of these arrests go back as far as 2002, but it's still a valid measure. A lot of companies pay very good money to get their websites bumped up into Google's top 10. Marketing research indicates that 90% of Googlers never go past page 3.
Poor Albert, Louie and Ira didn't even make the top 30! We also know of other teams who finished out of the money, like South Carolina, Oklahoma, Marshall and others.
Dvorocek at Oklahoma nearly killed two guys -- two separate occasions, two different guys. Anger management issues, poor thing. Two Mountaineer alums robbed a grocery store. Violent assaults and rapes were the most common offenses. So tOSU's troubles look a lot different when put in perspective.
I am not excusing the problem kids at tOSU at all. Never would. But is 'fair and balanced' coverage too much to ask of ESPN? The answer's pretty obvious.
