Florida's current woes explained

Gatorubet

Loathing All Things Georgia
We have become victims of Meyer's success. Defensive line coach Dan McCarney accepted a head coaching job at North Texas. That makes him the eighth assistant under Meyer to move from an assistant to a head coaching position. Former defensive coordinator Charlie Strong left following the 2009 season for the Louisville job. Dan Mullen (offensive coordinator) left for Missy State. Doc Holliday went to Marshall. Former staffers Kyle Whittingham (Utah), Greg Brandon (Bowling Green), Mike Sanford (UNLV) and Tim Beckman (Toledo) all took head coaching jobs after serving as assistants under Meyer.

McCarney's leaving now marks the seventh Florida assistant to leave the program in the past three years. Simply put, our coaching staffs have become less cohesive and effective over time. There is a great benefit to a stable coaching staff.

An alternate theory is that we just sucked this year and Urban was too pig headed to ditch Brantley and go with a spread QB like Reed.

So you're saying it is a blessing that no one is hiring Bollman away

Maybe they just don't like working for a drama queen. :p

When was Tim Beckman an assistant under Meyer? At BGSU? Kind of a stretch to claim him as a loss from two schools ago.

It would be. Which is why the 7 in three years stat was put out there. The other list of assistants who are now head coaches was not the main point, just to show that it is thought that a gig as assistant with UM is a good stepping stone from a career standpoint for head coach wanna bes.

The recent loss of our DC and OC - and the seven assistant coaches in three years - is what I was trying to focus on.

How many left since the SECCG last year?

If there were 5 in the span before that, why didn't the wheels come off before? Were they just better for being near Tebow?

Maybe they just lost their QB to academic/laptop troubles and the system is not very flexible for Brantley's skillset. The assistants surely didn't help, but this seems like it should have impacted 2009 too, no?

We feel your pain brother. This is the main reason Ohio State always sucks.

As noted, we lost Mark Dantonio, Mark Snyder, Walt Harris, Tim Spencer, Tim Beckman, Bill Conley, Bob Tucker and Mel Tucker. Other than that, some former assistants that went on to become head coaches include Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Bill Mallory, Nick Saben, Bo Schembechler, Lou Holtz, Bill Arnsparger, Glen Mason, and Gary Blackney. Even assistant coach Jim Tressel left the Buckeyes to be a head coach elsewhere.

After losing all this talent in the coaching ranks, and have it go on year after year....tOSU should close down the football program.

Coach Addazio instead of Mullen as the OC did impact us. But having a quality senior led group like Tebow, Riley, Spikes, etc., made up for it. Losing our OC and DC back-to-back was not good. It is more complicated than that for sure, and it sure as shit is not an exclusive - er - excuse. But the carousel of coaches did not help us.
