Florida State Seminoles (official thread)

1168876074052308993

So game 1 of the CFB and one of your starters openly admits to not being in proper condition...

Such a pessimistic view. Did you not hear the part where they are going to fix the conditioning this week by practicing harder?

Tallahassee is a much smaller city, and with much less around it, so they have to get a higher percentage of the local population to choke down an inferior product.

Fair. But OSU has packed 100,000 in the Shoe for a Spring Game for the promise of $5 tickets. FSU can’t draw 50% that with walk up for a real game against Boise St?

But why the dip in on field performance?

If it walks like a (lame) duck, and quacks like a (lame) duck, then it might be Willie Taggart has been Peter Principled into another head coaching role he’s unqualified for.

Sometimes great recruiters and great coordinators need to recognize their limitations.

The wheels were wobbling pretty bad when Jimbo was still there. They've just fallen off since Taggart arrived. I think poor recruiting caught up to Jimbo at the end. I'd be interested in @Gatorubet 's thoughts

There's still 400,000+ people within easy driving distance of the stadium. I have a friend who has (or had) attended every Florida State game up until this year. I asked him about this game (which he said he originally had tickets too but didn't bother to attend when they moved it much closer to him) and he said he sold his entire season ticket package because he forgot to stop it from auto-renewing earlier this year. He said part of it was due to his age (he's in his late 50s now), part of it was cost and he said part of it was how the environment and atmosphere surrounding the whole program just isn't fun anymore. He agrees with the idea that the program is waning - he thinks the program is going to sink back to the pre-Bowden days.

I don’t disagree with any of this.

My point was that there are over 2M people in easy driving distance of Buckeye home games. But there are plenty of programs that survive downturns whose geographical situation is closer to the Seminoles that the Buckeyes. I totally agree with your friend though; the Seminoles may not survive this.

I haven’t kept up with them since I left Tallahassee 9 years ago, but at that time they STILL did not have an indoor practice facility and they STILL did not have the scholarships fully endowed. Ohio State has had The Woody since the 80s, and had the French Field House before that. The football team’s scholarships have been fully endowed longer than I’ve been alive.

FSU has the right mix of advantages to catch lightning in a bottle once in a while. They are a long way from building a lasting foundation. Bobby Bowden wasn’t their Woody Hayes; he was a homeless meth-head’s Francis Schmidt, but with better recruiting. They still have to find their Paul Brown; then they can start thinking about sustainable success.

Short version: FSU sucks, their recruiting is a nightmare. But more importantly, they are broke, and can't afford the buyout to launch Willie. They are stuck with him for several years. I hope FSU's status quo is decade's long. When you fall off the map for a number of years, recruits write you off. They want the TV time and playoff contender spotlight for their NFL chances. And while they may be wrong in that assessment, it drives the 5 stars to the hot programs.

Jimbo is a magician, taking the Clown College to the cleaners, and then bamboozling Aggy into $$$$$. Could not happen to two nicer programs.
