There have been lots of hits, some misses and some head-scratchers among the top-rated receivers in Rivals history dating back to 2002. This recruiting cycle, Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna’s
Jeremiah Smith
holds the top spot.

It’s nearly unfathomable to think the five-star won’t pan out.
I hate making outlandish comparisons, but Smith might be the best No. 1 receiver since
Julio Jones
in 2008 and their playing styles are very similar.

Jones was a little thicker at the same stage but Smith can dominate any time he wants. No cornerback I’ve seen has any luck with him. He has speed to go deep, he has length to outjump cornerbacks, he’s athletic, he’s super competitive and he has great hands.
At the OT7 tournament in Phoenix, when Smith wanted to turn it up a notch there was no stopping him. There was the deep bomb that went for a touchdown – and it went viral. There were the countless other catches.
He’s the best receiver in this class – and likely will be remembered as one of the best in Rivals history – and if I had to compare him to someone right now, yes, it would be Jones.

An Ohio State Buckeye commit, Smith might be the best wide receiver prospect to come out of the Sunshine State in over a decade, which is a pretty bold statement. But the tape (caught 58 passes for 1,073 yards and 20 touchdowns last season) and in-person evaluations (has dominated the winter camp/7-on-7 circuit) back that claim up.

In addition, Ohio State had 1 (probably 2) other WRs leave early for the NFL who were 1st round draft picks that could be playing at Ohio State in 2023: Wilson Garrett* (2022) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (2023) The recruiting at WR has been that good.

* with extra COVID year.

Also, Tuimoloau and Sawyer should be best pair of (i.e. bookend pass rushing) DEs in college football this coming season.

J. Smith is a 2024 recruit so won’t be on the roster. I also do think Fleming is the #3 WR at least to start the season. To your point, yes WR recruiting has been that good.

WHOOPS....:smash: I really hope Fleming can stay healthy and earns a starting spot; however, we are hearing very good things about other WRs like Tate, Ballard, Rogers, and Innis, etc.

I’ve written that Smith could be the best No. 1 wide receiver in any recruiting class since

Julio Jones
, and I stand by it after seeing him again at the OT7 Phoenix recently. When the Ohio State commit wants to dominate, there is no one in the 2024 class who can stop him.


Last recruiting cycle, Smith played on the same South Florida Express team as five-stars

Brandon Inniss
and
Carnell Tate
, and an argument could have been made that Smith was the most special receiver among that group. He didn’t dominate as much as Tate and Inniss, but with his size, gazelle-like stride and playmaking ability it was clear that Smith is going to be special.


There was a debate until the end whether Inniss, Tate or USC signee

Zachariah Branch
was the best receiver in the 2023 class. It’s going to be nearly impossible to move Smith off the No. 1 receiver line because he has all the tools to be incredibly good.


As for his recruitment, the Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna standout remains locked in with the Buckeyes. If five-star quarterback

Dylan Raiola
commits to Georgia, though, it could get really interesting because the Bulldogs have been the team most aggressively trying to flip Smith.

Only major issue with this article, is that Smith is being recruited much harder by UF and Miami, not UGA.

whew, that really got away from me. I meant you'll be another backup that has to wait his turn.

No, obviously I didn't mean to insult your a ility, you'd be the exception and would play, just not there, because they have too many of you. you'd be a backup.

Yes, that's true, we have backups too, but they aren't dwarfed by any star wrs at our school.
