First Generation College Students at Ohio State

ORD_Buckeye

Wrong glass, Sir.
I know that some--Cincibuck in particular--have been concerned that with increased admissions selectivity, Ohio State would begin to look more like a private boarding school than a land-grant university. Ohio State just released a press release on the 2007 freshman class which showed that, despite its high standards, its proportion of first generation college students was nearly 50% higher than the national average (22.7% vs. 15.9%).

News and Information - The Ohio State University

The standards for the class were:

52% of applicants accepted
middle 50% range of ACT scores: 26-30
Average ACT score 28.4
27% scored 30+/72% scored 26+
57% from the top tenth of high school class
91% from the top quarter of high school class

High quality doesn't necessarily mean that we're going to become some preppy playground.

28.4 on the ACT is great.

Interesting. How old was that article? I wonder whether they were projecting a lower yield--with more of the higher end accepted kids not enrolling. I know that first projections for top 10% class rank was 52%, but they just posted 57% as enrolled. Still, the jump to 28.4 that was e-mailed to me seems a little large. On the other hand, the web site has already posted that 72% of the class was at 26+, so maybe it's accurate.

Well i'm gonna be applying in a month or two now, and should i get accepted/ enroll i would be a first-generation tOSU student.

But the class rank stuff is bullshit. At my school, a 4.12 GPA gets you 126 out of 428, (top 29%).

I would love to go there, though.

It sounds like you go to a hell of a competitive high school, which I can't believe won't be taken into consideration when evaluating your class rank. That, your gpa and being the first generation in your family to go to college, and I doubt you have anything to worry about. Just don't choke the ACT.
