  • I've noticed for quite a while that when I view youtube videos that are embedded in another page (primarily here on BP), Firefox consumes 97% or more of my system resources. That occasionally causes the video to pause the system to hang for a moment. I did some searching on the web and ended up uninstalling adobe flash (using their unistaller) and then reinstalled the program. No change. Today, I just went to the youtube website instead and noticed that when watching videos there my cpu usage goes up to maybe 50% or so at the most. For one final test, I watched a video here on BP and the usage was basically 100%. I followed the video link and watched the same video on the actual youtube site in which case it only consumed about 50%.

Anyone have an explanation? It's not that big of a deal, but I'm curious.

    WinXP
    Firefox 3.0.6
    Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36

    Ok...

    I have WinXP

    I have FireFox 2.0.0.20 (I hate upgrades  )

    I have Flash version 9.0.124.0....

    hmmmmm.....

I think I see a pattern, like maybe you've encountered a bug with the new FireFox version or maybe a problem with how the Flash player interacts with the browser.

It's a flash plug memory leak...Try reconfiguring firefox manually. Click New Tab/Type about:config in the address bar,enter/Continue through prompted screen/Right click on the background of the page. Choose "new"/Interger. You will be prompted to name the integer. "browser.cache.memory.capacity" without the quotes. You can specify the amount you want to allow in kbs. Try using 55000k or so. This should drop immediatley after restarting firefox, and going back to youtube.

If you don't want to configure it manually there is also a small program that will do it for you..Firefox Ultimate Optimizer - Download
You HAVE to have it running while running firefox to have it work though.

Adding the new string didn't seem to have any effect. Again, I don't have a problem when I use the YouTube website, only when a YouTube video is embedded in another website such as BP. And it's not really a "problem", exactly, but kind of odd that the system resources would be consumed to such a greater extent.

In my quick google search I found that I'm not the only one with this issue. I'll try to find out some other things tomorrow. Need sleep now.

Thanks for the advice, though - both of you :)
