Firefighters watch as garage burns

I hope he sues and wins big time. Fuck "membership dues". Emergency and protective services such as police, fire, and ambulance should never, ever, be denied because of finances. Hey, if the FD knew he hadn't paid his "dues" then why did they respond in the first place?
In case the fire spread to his neighbor who actually paid his dues.

What if the town can't afford a fire department without the dues?

What if his failure to pay the fire protection dues voided his insurance policy?

So all this guy had to do was either yell "I don't know if my daughter made it out" or simply run into the building himself.

When they realized he didn't have a daughter, they would have to set it on fire again. :tongue2:

My guess is they sent him a bill monthly or quarterly for a year and a half... if the guy wants to stiff the FD, then I agree with the FD, let the place burn... pay up or shut up...

If the insurance co. knew he didn't have fire coverage I'm sure they would have either charged more, or not covered him... my guess is his premium will increase now that everybody knows he doesn't have fire protection (heck they want to know how close your house is to a fire hydrant... i'm sure no fd service would jack the rates big time)...

I doubt that. Were they spraying the neighboring house(s) as a precautionary measure, like fire departments due in forest/brush fires? If not, then that argument goes up in smoke (pun intended).

Municipalities are required to provide certain services in order to be incorporated. I wonder if their "police department" and "ambulance services" are also paid for by community dues.

Muni FD's are a weird entities much like Port Authorities. They are funded a number of ways. Many are 100% Volunteer and are supported by dues and bake sales. Some are funded by tax revenues. Some a combination of both. And others have the power to raise debt through municipal funds or leases.

IMO if it is funded by private money/fees and you don't pay for the service, do not be surprised if you do not get the service. Ignorance is no excuse.

Agreed. It is no different than trying to get car insurance after an accident. Police and fire services are a privaledge, not a right. And if he knew up front that it was a private FD only funded by dues...then get out some smores and enjoy the heat.
