Large fire burns at Universal Studios lot

UNIVERSAL CITY, California (AP) -- A Los Angeles fire official says a large fire is burning on a lot at Universal Studios.

Los Angeles fire Capt. Frank Reynoso said the blaze was reported just before dawn Sunday on a sound stage on a back lot. There are no immediate reports of injuries.

Reynoso says filming could have been going on at the time and that there has been at least one explosion.

He said the fire is contained to the back lot, and firefighters are working to ensure the flames don't spread to nearby brush.

Helicopters are dropping water onto the burning structures.

About 100 city and county firefighters are helping studio firefighters tackle the blaze.

The worst part is the loss of their Video Vaults - thought they claim to have duplicates at another location, those were the originals.

***UPDATE*** A fire at Universal Studios has destroyed a set from "Back to the Future," the King Kong exhibit and a video vault containing more than 40,000 videos and reels.
Los Angeles County fire Captain Frank Reynoso says the blaze broke out just before dawn Sunday on a backlot stage at the 400-acre property. The fire has been contained.
Officials say the iconic courthouse square from "Back to the Future," has been destroyed, and the famous clocktower that enabled star Michael J. Fox's character to time travel has been damaged.
NBC Universal President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer says 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged in the video vault, but there are duplicates in a different location.

I've been on those grounds over a dozen times... with hindsight.. it was inevitable since so many of those structures and sets are wood ... and so much are mere facades... plus soooo old, which makes it look suspicious

it's a dual edge... sad to lose sets with such history... but opportunity for Universal to build modern

to not have fire PROOF vaults is unforgivable
