Turnovers are going to be critical and despite all the missed opportunities by the defense this year, I think we are going to come up with a few picks, maybe even one going back for six.
Can LSU maintain focus throughout the game? If Ohio State either manages to establish a power running game or has a lot of success in the air with Boeckman, I don't think LSU's offense can carry them back. Their offense sure can't take credit for the win over Tenn.
Worries:
#1. LSU establish running lanes on the outside. If they can get chucks of yardage like Texas was able to last season by pitching the ball to one of their three talented backs, it's going to be a long night. Everybody has to tackle well and make it a third and long.
#2. Setting Holiday in motion before the snap. Just like Florida did with Percy Harvin. Again, Ohio State has to tackle very well and maintain their discipline.
#3. Can we go vertical against LSU? As good as Beanie is, he is going to have problems finding yardage against an eight-men box. LSU's LBers are not the biggest, but they can sure close fast as heck and run with you sideline to sideline. Highsmith was only 6-1 200 coming out of HS, and it seems like every OLBer coming out of Florida is pretty much like that. If Miles put his corners on an island with Robiskie, which is what I think he will do, we got to make him pay for that.
Things working in our favor:
#1. I think the defense will come out and be ready to play. Our young DL has endured the season and made some tremendous progress. Whereas in the beginning of the season, you would hope that a player like Doug Denlinger plays at a high level from week to week, now, you expect him to. Denlinger, Russell, Coleman, and to some extent Heyward are go-to guys, guys that players and coaches look to when the game is on the line. I think those guys' maturation will be huge for the defense.
#2. Boeckman's had time to regroup and get healthy. Tressel must be telling him not to force anything under any circumstance, and if he does that, Boeckman can be a fantastic playmaker for us.
#3. Beanie's hungry. I've never been in the huddle with these players, but just judging by the body language, it's very apparent that Beanie is now the emotional leader of the pack. If Beanie is just as pissed off at LSU as he is at Michigan, then we'll fine. Need motivational tools? As long as Beanie is angry and lets his teammates know in the locker room how much he wants this, we'll be fine.
