Fight Night Round 4 Thread

NextBuck

All-American
I got the game yesterday at Gamestop. They have this deal where you trade in three games from a list and get it for free, and thats what I did.

I'm really enjoying it. I wish there were more boxers, but the create a boxer mode lets you create some of your favorites. The gameplay is really fun, and the graphics on the fighters and the ring are great. Like most sports games the crowds look like shit.

I dont play games for like 5 hours at a time usually, but I have with this one.

I'd suggest it for fans of boxing.

I got this one as well. I loved Fight Night 3, Fight Night 4 is a bit different however.

In 3 I thrived as a counter puncher. I usually leaned back, waiting for an opponent to throw a punch, then lit into him with hook after hook. In 4 they've sped up the speed of the fighting a bit, which is more true to form. On one side I seem to have to throw a ton of punches, and its all fast paced which makes it tougher to be a counter puncher, yet I score well with the judges despite not making much of a dent in the opposition..

It seems that power punchers are rewarded too easily with stuns and knock downs. I'm starting my career as an outside fighter a bit like Ali, throwing lots of jabs to impress the judges and throwing some hooks when appropriate to knock down those with a weak chin. My old defensive tricks just aren't as effective anymore, however, and the power hitters are much more lethal than they were in the past.

I'm thinking of starting over and making Ivan Drago from Rocky IV, pummel the competition into submission :)

That's interesting because after watching the IGN review on youtube and hearing about other reviews it seemed like the gameplay relied heavily on counter punching. I haven't played yet, so I can't really say, but that's how it seemed. I understand it being harder if the fighting is faster, I just haven't had a chance to play yet.

Overall the game is pretty balanced. Counter Punching is definitly rewarded well, however. Successful counter punches hurt more than a normal punch.

On the other hand, you can be an outside guy, throw mostly jabs and if you don't get hit much, you'll win ever round which is boring...but thats how I ended up making my boxer unfortunately.

If you're an outside guy, and you do a piss poor job against an inside power hitter, they'll mess you up bad. They'll counter your jab easily, and they'll do it with a Haymaker which will stun you. Another square punch will put you on the ground after you've been stunned. So, in that respect an outside guy can be easy to win with as long as you're a chicken shit and can keep away from the other guy.

The only downside to a counter puncher is when you fight another counter puncher. It forces you to throw a few jabs out there to lure the other guy into throwing a punch. If you're successful in dodging his retaliation you can follow up with one of your own...but I just haven't been able to do it as well in this game as I could in Fight Night 3. Probably just need more practice.

Finally got to GOAT. Took over 50 fights to get there. The only negative now is my guy is so built up all strategy is out the window. I just keep pounding guys with right hands. Easy guys I knock out in 1 or 2 rounds (when I mean easy anyone under 85 rating). Tougher might take 5. I just demolish everyone now. Mike Tyson has eaten floor at least 10 times by now.

I must admit it was more fun when I had to have a strategy. I suppose once he starts going down it will get fun again.

I'm 5 wins away from G.O.A.T now, but my defense is a bit lacking even as Champ. While I like some of the improvements in this game, I prefer 3 I think. It was more polished in some respects. I get pissed off when doing the Heavy Combo Bag Training, I see a lower uppercut fire off and they don't give me credit for it :mad2: Never happens when I use controller style 3. Tyson still gives me hell because I eat too many punches, so I gotta work on that.
Scott, have you gotten the chance to fight in another weight division yet?

Nope, no other weight division yet. Haven't played it much in the last couple days since I just waste everyone now.

As for training, yeah, heavy bag combos is a pain. Not that big of a deal. I only use my left for jabs anyway.

As for Tyson, and long as your head and body are strong just out punch him. He has no defense. I knock him out in about 2 rounds. It's not even close.
