its a combination of the fact that attitudes towards children in this country have changed and the near instant availability of information. in the past stories like this wouldn't have made it past local news. today the victim is on youtube 3 minutes after she confides to the school counselor.



agreed. historically and realistically, this is primarily an american taboo and even then only a recent one. if you really look deep into history you will see that this type of behavior is not uncommon. thats of course not to say it is right of course.

It's a very, very weird dichotomy. On the one hand, people are realizing the extreme vulnerability of children to sexual acts (particularly forced ones), and the long-term impact it can have on them for the rest of their lives. That's a good thing. On the other hand, this society is also hyper-sexualizing children (particularly teens) more and more agressively, through the media, through the internet...through what is tolerated and promoted. The benefit of that is certainly far more debatable, but the weird irony can't be missed...sex with children by predatory adults is of course horrible, but sex by children with each other (which can also be predatory, or at least socially predatory) is permitted, if not somewhat glorified.

Now I'm no prude, and I believe in children having as much age-appropriate information as they can about things that impact their lives. I can't help but wonder, though, if pedophiles aren't in some way encouraged, and lines aren't is some way blurred in their warped minds (in the case of post-pubescent children) by the sexualized society we live in. Hell, even 5-year-olds used to play dress-up with mom in the safety of their own house...now mom is dresing them up and schlepping them off to beauty pagents.

As all of my previous posts attest to, NONE of this is any excuse for adult predatory behavior to children...there is no penalty, in my mind, that should be off the table, except for freaking PROBATION, for violating a child. But every person or society looking to improve itself looks inward...that said, there is no easy answer to "unsexualizing" society, and there is no easy answer, if you could, as to how far to go back either.

Very good point. In many modern countries it isn't as taboo. Thus we get the well organized "tours" to Pan-Asian countries for the express purpose of underage sexual interaction for example.

While I agree here, I also don't think it can totally be "blamed" on media that helps further the early sexualization of younger people. We get taller, healthier, live longer, die slower, and mature faster now then we ever have in history. At one point, 30 years old was a veritable Methuselah! I do believe that this trend is a large part of why we see "kids growing up so fast these days" as well as the media factors you mentioned.

Yes I agree...I wasn't "blaming" the media in the sense I was pawning off the responsibility...quite the contrary, the media, at the end of the day, only does what our society allows. If teen magazines with girls dressed somewhat suggestively on the cover were never bought, there wouldn't be any. If no one actually watched Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann's lovefest, they wouldn't have shows. People make those determinations in the US...thus it's people who are responsible.
