Feeshin/1000 post thread

I Heart Boobs
Ahh one of my favorite past times. I am startin this over here because of a discussion on the football forum that was getting off topic a tad, so I figured I'd bring it over here. While I am at it. How many fisherman we got on here?

LV -

We went about 4-5 hours north of International Falls, MN. Lac Seul. Huge lake, very rough, in fact it's so rough that I dont think we'll be going back there. Walleye fishing is outstanding if you can stand the rough water. Weather was awful this year, but we still didnt do too bad. Caught some nice Walleye, and my dad caught a 42" Pike, we didnt have a scale on us, but guessed it was between 25 and 30 lb. Here is a pic. We also saw a bunch of Black Bears btw.

You will notice the ridiculous outfits. That is because most of the week it was in the 50's, raining. We love smallmouth fishing, and are probably gonna hit Big Vermillion Lake next summer (my dad has been there, they tore up on Smallies).

Fly fisherman here (Or worm drowner as some people call us, but I still don't understand it). That is one of the few nice things about this state. I can be at a nice trout stream in 20 minutes and several very productive trout/salmon/steelhead rivers are within a couple of hours. Heck, the little creek that runs through the town I live in always has a salmon run. Also, you can always drive 30 minutes to Lake MI for all kinds of lake fishing.

In a few weeks the pressure will begin on the salmon fishing. You see some of the craziest shit during salmon season. Lots of snagging of fish, competition for holes and beds, and every once in a while a fight in the middle of the river.

I enjoy it because it is one of the few hobbies I have that actually relaxes me.

wow... that Northern is freaking HUUUGE... what kind of leaders were you using? we've caught some biggies where we go, but nothing on that scale... then again, you were quite a bit further north than i was, so i'm guessing that while the Pike are smaller where i was, the Bass were larger... and there aren't any walleyes either, but we caught about a 12 pound Lake Trout... in fact, i'm pretty sure that there are NO Largemouths on Lac Seul- it's too far north... smallies are a different matter... but where we go, the lakes aren't 'that' big... maybe a mile across and 3-5 miles long, but they're all connected... we would drag a canoe behind the boat, then park the boat and paddle the canoe back in the lillies, and portage over beaver dams and stuff, to get into lakes that people haven't fished in years... my brother was KILLING the largemouths one morning with a Hula Popper... i think he caught 15 bass over 16 inches in less than an hour... simply fantastic fishing...

i was talking to Bill, the old guy who started the camp where we stay about fishing, and he got to telling guide stories... it seems that some rich guy from NY had offered a $1,000 prize to anyone who could catch him a 50 inch Muskie... so Bill went to a butcher shop and bought a couple gallons of cow blood... then he caught a squirrel (not sure how)... anyway Bill rigged the squirrel up with a few huge hooks, and dumped the blood in the water... a few minutes later BAM! a monster Muskie hit... when they finally wrestled it into the boat, it was 55 inches long... i'd like to see that at the end of my line...

That squirrel story reminds me of a guy I used to work with and how they fished in the Upper Peninsula of MI (The people from there are a bit different). They used to take baby ducks and put line with hooks around them. The ducks would swim out and the pike and muskie would come for them. Sickest bait I have ever heard of.

Honestly I cant tell you what lb the leaders were off the top of my head, but we keep them on all lures, mainly because no matter what you're fishin for up there, those crazy Northerns will hit anything. I have seen some crazy things. Seen a walleye being reeled in, and a Northern hits the walleye. We've had several instances where we caught 2 fish on 1 lure, etc. Lac Seul does have Smallies, but it's in the southern areas of the lake, not up where we were. There ARE smallmouth there, because last trip to the same camp, we caught quite a few of them. None this year, but as I said, the weather had everything screwed up. Sad thing is, nobody up there fishes for smallies, they are strictly Walleye.

We caught quite a few walleye 24" or better. Tons of 17-20. Couple white fish as well. My dad caught a nice Lake Trout on his one trip to Big Vermilion, he had it mounted. He is getting a replica of that Northern.

We have normal Ohio type Lakes over here.........Tappan, Piedmont, Salt Fork, Seneca...........and the fishing basically sucks at all of them. Course I am spoiled by Canada.
