Feeling Frustration after good Seasons?

How do you deal with OSU losses to "lesser"(lower ranked) opponents?

Great years by football and both hoops teams this year! BUT...Am I the only Buckeye fan getting tired of, or rather used to, highly regarded Buckeye teams (regardless of sport) falling short in big games/ situations? How can we explain this? It happened this year to both men's and women's hoops (losing to lower seeds) and to men's hockey (pre-season top five, no playoffs). Certainly we're all familiar with the football teams woes vs. UM under Cooper. But even Woody and Earle had trouble with big games. Top five teams in '62 & '63 lost to unranked UCLA & USC respectively. 1969's #1 team lost to #12 UM. 1970, 74, 75, 79, 84, 93, 95, 98, 2000, just to name a few, all saw highly ranked Buckeye teams fall to lower, or un, ranked opponents, in many cases costing OSU national titles. Women's hoops in '93 lost the title game to a lower seed. Anyone have any thoughts on this phenomenon? Does it cheapen the success teams have during the rest of the year? Just curious if I was alone in this.

Small word of advice. It's not a good idea to come on and make your first post ever a negative post. Makes you look bad and people will assume that you are just here to flame. Just some words of advice for the future.

Seems to me someone doesn't understand how tough it is to win a title. That OSU has been highly regarded at all (based on performance, hopefully) is the important part. Sure, winning the big game is great. It sure beats losing it. But, I'd much rather end up #2 in 1996 and 1998 than to have not had the chance to even worry if OSU even COULD be Number 1.

My apologies to the community, then. It was in no way my intention to be negative or to flame. Just offering comment on some observed trends. To be sure, I am extremely proud of the way our kids performed this year. Sure, it's disappointing to come up short, probably for none more than the teams involved, but that does not minimize the effort the athletes and coaches put forth. I thought I might offer a topic for discussion. Clearly not the best first impression. Again, my apologies.

I would say you have this at a lot of schools. It's not just tOSU this haprens to. It called sports and a competition. You'll always have upsets and your definately not going to win them all. Just ask The Atl. Braves....

as already stated, this statement clearly exemplifies a lack of respect for just how difficult it is to win a title. Surely we have lost games that cost us shots at a potential title, but there are often at least 8 schools every year which surely can say that, and probably a dozen who would say so as homers.

if you think this basketball season was a disappointment, you are really out there. It was a disappointing finish, but a team with 6.5 players & only one true post player isn't going to win many titles. I thought we could catch fire and make a run in the tourney, but to not do so is not a failure, IMO (especially not against a team like Georgetown).

Some years in football were failures, to lose to inferior teams from up north. This team overachieved this year, and stopped doing so down the stretch (I thought they could catch fire again, and I was wrong).

Not to dump on our newest entrant - but consider last year and how very different the fate of the football team was from the tenor of the post.

We lost to whom?

Texas by one score - and we all know how well they ended up doing, and

Penn State on their turf, by a similar margin, and as I recall their year was pretty darned good also.

We end up trouncing Notre Dame in one of the major BCS bowls and notch a final ranking in the top 3.

If your major complaint in life is that slim difference between that kind of would have been and the darned good reality that was, then your life isn't that bad.

Frankly, the one thing I have come to expect from Tressel is the ability to get his teams up for the big game.

Cooper he isn't and lets leave John's follies out of this please.

I never want to see my University lose at any sport, but, I'm not stupid, I know it happens a lot. I don't like to see underachieving though, I draw the line there. If accomplishments are commensurate with talent, I have no issue, just a fan, and follow all I can. Therefore, I'm pretty happy this year with everything. Would I have liked to see both basketball teams do better in the NCAA's, of course. Am I losing sleep over it, not a chance. Both have a tremendous foundation to grow upon and I am very happy with that. :oh: :io:
