FB/LB Zach Boren (Official Thread)

Grenade

...it wasn't disrespectful to anybody. It's something they do every Friday. At the last thing when we go to victory, take a knee -- and it surprised me the first time they did it -- No. It wasn't disrespectful to anybody. It's something those kids have done for 12 weeks.

Apparently Mr. Choke claims that they never meant any disrespect.

yeah...right, I'll betcha they had been practicing it the whole season just to get back at us!!!

Is there even a chance that Zach gets a chance at the LB spot with that being a depth concern..I thought he made the comment he wanted to play LB earlier this year..I mean I know he's a Jr. and all but is it possible under Coach Meyer? I'd love to see him bust up Dnard.

Absolutely.

Coach Urban Meyer said he already knows that one of the captains of his first Ohio State team is going to be defensive tackle John Simon, and he indicated yesterday fullback Zach Boren likely will be another one.

One reason is because of their work ethic, he said, and another is their demeanor.

?The first thing is they?re not just popping off,? Meyer said yesterday after practice. ?I can?t stand a guy who just stands up there and talks. That?s not leadership to me. Leadership is by example.?

He said he thinks both of those seniors will have a future in the game, no matter whether it includes the NFL.

?Those will be two good football coaches someday, if they decide to coach,? Meyer said.

Ohio State football: Boren gets hands-on experience in offense
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday April 17, 2012

Fullback Zach Boren had 20 catches in his previous three seasons, including one against Indiana last year.
CHRIS RUSSELL | DISPATCH

The wins accrued during the 2010 season have been expunged from the Ohio State record book because of NCAA sanctions, but at least one individual moment from that year lives on with fullback Zach Boren.

It was his 2-yard run in the Michigan game ? his only official carry to date in college football.

In fact, up until coach Urban Meyer and his staff took over this year, the fullback in the previous OSU offense didn?t get many carries in practice, either.

?In practice? It was probably once, because we were getting ready for that Michigan game when I did get the handoff,? Boren said. ?I?d say that was probably the only time.?

It appears that a new day has dawned. In the team?s scrimmage last Saturday alone, Boren got two handoffs. He also caught a shovel pass, although in his previous three seasons with the Buckeyes he had 20 catches.

The change has come because Meyer is the connoisseur of the spread offense, of putting the quarterback in the shotgun with a running back next to him, flanking receivers the breadth of the field, then letting it rip.

So how does a fullback figure into that?

?They?re going to be utilized,? assistant coach Tim Hinton said. ?And Zach Boren is a good football player. That?s the thing about Zach ? Coach Meyer wants to put the best people in the lineup in the best positions.?

OSU's Boren excited about Meyer's offense
July 27, 2012
Jim Naveau

CHICAGO ? Carrying the football hasn?t been part of Ohio State fullback Zach Boren?s job description the last three years, but that could be changing.

He?s heading into his fourth season as OSU?s starting fullback. In that time, he has carried the ball once.

As he recalled that one time he charged into the line with the football in his hands instead of leading the way for another running back at the Big Ten media days on Friday, he said he is excited about the plans for him in coach Urban Meyer?s new offense.

He wouldn?t specify exactly what those plans were, but he did say Buckeyes fans will see him doing different things this year.

?There?s a bunch of stuff that will be happening with me. I?m excited to see what will happen. I guess we?ll see come Game One,? Boren said.

His one carry came against Michigan in 2010 in the fourth quarter and was more of reward from coach Jim Tressel for doing the dirty work of blocking for someone else than anything else.

In Tressel?s traditional I-offense, Boren?s job was to take on a defender to try to clear space for the tailback. In Meyer?s spread offense, the skills he displayed as a high school tailback and at times when he caught 20 passes during his Ohio State career could be seen more.

He didn?t bemoan his previous role. In fact, he came to Ohio State intending to hit people as a linebacker before he was switched to fullback when he enrolled early after signing in 2009.

?When I went to fullback I kind of brought the linebacker attitude to fullback. I was going to go out and hit someone,? Boren said. ?I prided myself on leading the running back to the right area and then making contact and hitting a guy.?

He has been working with Ohio State?s tailbacks during the offseason and also has dropped 25 pounds down to 240 in anticipation of his changing role.

?I wasn?t in bad shape or anything,? Boren said. ?I?m as strong as I?ve ever been, actually I?m stronger.

?What people have to realize is we?re not running an I-offense anymore. I don?t need to be going through on an iso (fullback blocking a linebacker) and trying to take out a dude and cracking my helmet or cracking my facemask. Our offense isn?t in that era anymore.

?We have a new offense where we don?t need that. This offense is more fast-paced. Getting in the huddle for 20 seconds and snapping the ball with one second left on the play clock, that?s done,? he said.

Less Boren, more options
Slimmed-down senior could have a unique role in Buckeyes' offense

Senior fullback Zach Boren has lost 25 pounds and will be more than a blocker in Ohio State's offense.
Proof of his ability to handle the football was buried behind three years as a blocker.

Zach Boren only needed a couple weeks to knock off that rust and get used to carrying it again.

The bigger hurdle in expanding his role in Ohio State's new spread offense was the athleticism and speed the senior had trapped underneath the extra weight he had accumulated for his other role at fullback.

That process took a bit longer and considerably more effort than simply lining up for offseason drills with the tailbacks this summer. But after shedding 25 pounds and steadily impressing the coaching staff, Boren appears poised to become a legitimate option for the Buckeyes out of the backfield when training camp opens Friday.

"The coaches came in and said they wanted to expand my role, but in order to do that, I had to lose some weight, get faster and stuff like that," Boren said last week at Big Ten media days. "I was on board from the moment they got here.

"It's been a while since I ran the ball, you know back to high school, but I'm trying to get back to those roots. I see my role expanding a lot in this offense, and I'm excited about it, ecstatic to be doing whatever I'm going to be doing this season."

Really excited to see what Boren brings to the offense. He's always had a lot of ability, but never was utilized to his full potential (IMO) since we always ran him in Dave.

I think we'll be very surprised as to what he does this year under Meyer. With Hall out for a few weeks, he's the senior guy in the backfield, and I hope Meyer really leverages that.
