THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
For only the second time in Ohio State history, a son will follow in his father's footsteps as a captain of the football team, OSU announced yesterday.
Senior fullback Dionte Johnson, whose father, Pepper Johnson, was a captain in 1984 and 1985, was one of three captains elected by the players.
James Herbstreit (1960) and Kirk Herbstreit (1992) are the other father and son to serve as OSU captains.

On becoming captain
"The person I called first was my father. It definitely is a tremendous honor right away and now I?m focused on getting down to business."
On his relationship with his teammates
"It's a great honor for me because my teammates vote and it gives me the assumption that they believe in me and that I can lead this team. I?m honored that they feel that I'm their captain."
On being a senior and leading the younger group
"Looking at the quarterbacks first, we try to take a lot of pressure off of them and that way they can get the ball to all the talented receivers that we have. We are also just trying to take care of our job and lighten the load on everybody else."
On getting ready for the first game
"Any time a team has an opportunity to play at the Horseshoe, they are going to play their absolute best. We expect it to be a great game and we have to be focused and disciplined. They are going to be an eager team and play their best football and we have to be prepared for it."

COLUMBUS ? For so long, Thomas "Pepper" Johnson ? Ohio State legend, NFL champion ? had it all over his son.
After all, he's got his very own All-America tree in the hallowed Buckeye Grove outside Ohio Stadium.
At his mother's house, he's got what his boy ? current Buck Dionte Johnson ? called his dad's "own personal hall of fame," with plaques touting him as everything from the team's 1985 defensive MVP to being on the Buckeyes' all-century team.

On his role as captain
?Everyone gets excited (about being 3-0), but my job is to calm everyone down. We can?t talk about Washington anymore, we need to focus on Northwestern.?
On the play of the offense in the first half of games this season
?Its not that we?re coming out flat, things just aren?t clicking. We have to get rid of the mistakes and penalties. We need to come out strong the rest of the year because people are going to be gunning for us.?
On having more opportunities in the power-I formation
?Any time you?re a fullback and you get in the power-I and have a chance to hit somebody, it?s a blessing.?

On Illinois
"They have nine returning starters and are a very tough team. They have been playing great. Illinois gives us something different every time and we have to be prepared for them. We know that they'll be ready for us."
On going through the tunnel the last time
"I can't believe this moment is actually here. I have been thinking about it a lot but we all have to move on. It?s a part of college athletics. We are going to make it a special day and we want to go out in style."

Buckeye can do dad two better with fourth Michigan win

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
There are days where Monica Hawkins feels like a walking Ohio State showcase, like Brutus Buckeye without the big head.
She brings it upon herself, mind you. The mother of Buckeyes fullback Dionte Johnson, Hawkins routinely wears a necklace containing two of the three gold pants Johnson has earned for beating Michigan.
"People are constantly stopping me and saying, 'Can I touch them, can I look at them, can I take a picture?' " said Hawkins, who lives in Columbus. "During the season, I wear them almost every day."
Johnson gave his other pair of gold pants to his maternal grandmother, Carol Hawkins.
And he has a chance to go four for four this Saturday, which would be something only two other classes have accomplished at Ohio State.
But her son's gold pants are not the first Monica has seen firsthand. Dionte's father, former Buckeyes linebacker Thomas "Pepper" Johnson, earned two pairs for victories over Michigan in 1982 and '84.
After Dionte earned his third pair last season, he captured family bragging rights.
"He definitely has something on me," Pepper Johnson said. "I'm happy for him."

"There is not much to do in New Orleans unless you are an alcoholic." -- Dionte Johnson , Ohio State fullback
If teams don't choose Johnson, he'll look at options

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Sounding like the son of an NFL veteran, Dionte Johnson said this week that it might be better for him not to be selected in the draft this weekend.
"If I go as a free agent, that might work out better," said the Ohio State fullback and son of Pepper Johnson, a longtime player and current New England Patriots assistant coach.
The thinking goes like this: Rather than be drafted very late, maybe by a team that doesn't really want or need him, Dionte believes he might end up in a better place by fielding numerous calls from teams who want him as a free agent.
"Then I can pick the best organization for me," he said. "I can look at which teams might need fullbacks the most."
Johnson, an Eastmoor Academy product, is not projected to be drafted. He is ranked by various services as somewhere between the eighth- and 14th-best fullback in the draft. During the past five years, an average of five fullbacks get drafted.
The good news for Johnson, though, is that an average of 12 fullbacks are signed to free-agent deals each year, so he's a safe bet to be in an NFL camp soon.
"You can't make too many plans right now," he said. "You don't know where you're going to be next year."
