Unfortunately, a lactose intolerance dictates that Breyer's lactose free vanilla is my current favorite- it is good, especially if you mix it up like a shake with Kahlua or Starbucks coffee liquor.

However, the best I've had (when I could still eat it) was Whitey's ice cream in Moline, IL. It's a local place who made their own, and it was absolutely fantastic.

Expect a long wait on weekends in the summer. In fact, you may not find a parking spot. I lived 3 miles from this place. Hard to limit my visits!

I agree that BR's Chocolate/Peanut Butter is great.

My favorite overall though is Blue Bell Ice Cream (main plant in Brenham, TX). Their Homemade Vanilla really rocks, as does their Banana Split flavor.

How is 'Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk' not a variation on chocolate?

It's a piece of chocolate in raspberry ice cream. It's the chocolate ice cream I don't care for. And variations involving the actual chocolate ice cream, such as rocky road, double chocolate, triple chocolate, death-by-chocolate, dark chocolate, way-too-much-fucking-chocolate, chocolate brownie, etc.

How do you feel about the swirl class of ice creams? Y'know, like fudge swirl?

Tough call....I could live with fudge swirled into vanilla ice cream, but would probably pass on vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream swirled in.
