Planning on picking up a semi automatic rife in the next couple months, anyone have any good suggestions? I know someone with one of the M16 variants, it seems to jam a lot though, so hoping to avoid it.
I'm guessing you're referring to an AR variant rather than an actual M-16.
Almost all AR failures can be traced to either bad magazines or inadequate lubrication by the operator.
The "ARs are jam-o-matics" is still primarily an urban myth despite the tons of anecdotal stories you're going to hear.
Buy good magainzes. Take care of them (aluminum feed lips get damaged easily). If one gets damaged or starts acting up...crush it & throw it away immediately.
Lube the [censored] out of the bolt & bolt carrier. ARs are meant to be run wet.
Clean her after you use her and everything will be fine.
If you don't like direct impingement there are plenty of piston ARs these days as well.
---That being said if you just HAVE to have something besides an AR (and there's nothing wrong with that) it really depends on what you want to do with it.
Self defense? Varmint hunting? To load down with high speed geegaws to impress the mall ninjas...
What caliber do you want to go with?
5.56 like an AR?
There's plenty of old battle rifles out there in 7.62x51... FALs, M-1a's etc.
AK clones come in 5.56, 7.62x39 or 5.54x39. The 5.54 surplus stuff is actually pretty cheap at the moment which is nice as everything else is skyrocketing in price.
What price range are you looking? AK clones start out well under $500 while some of the pre ban rifles or newer high end stuff is $2k+.
