I've always had a thing for Dickens--probably have about a dozen variations of Christmas Carol--everything from the early film versions to Mr. Magoo's (I think it actually has a pretty good score for a cartoon), Muppets, radio recordings of Orson Welles' & Barrymore's broadcasts, Finney's Scrooge, and the aforementioned Patrick Stewart version. Stewart is the only take I've ever seen of Scrooge where he could be described as virile, which I find interesting--think it's a nearly-perfect version of the story.

Have you seen the offbeat Disney Animated/CGI version from a few years ago with Jim Carrey voicing Scrooge? Quite well done, and actually a little creepy at times.

Yeah, that one did have a nice look to it. The only versions I ever saw that I positively couldn't stand were a cartoon I saw on TV once--not sure who produced it--that included a talking dog. Turned me off on first glance, and never went back. The other one was a TV version from a few years ago that starred Kelsey Grammer. I swear all I could think of watching it was "when is Mary Lou Retton going to show up doing gymnastics as Tiny Tim?" Found it so awful that it seemed like a real world version of the Christmas Carol in Scrooged.

My list is usually comprised of some mix of the following:

Classics: It's a Wonderful Life and one of the Christmas Carol movies--lately, I've leaned towards the 1970 Scrooge with Albert Finney over the older benchmark 50is version.

Classic kids' TV specials: Charlie Brown Xmas (despite that bastard and his little band of hooligans single-handedly destroying the beautiful American aluminum Christmas tree tradition) and Santa Claus is Coming to Town over the more widely watched Rudolph.

Ironic/Irreverent: Bad Santa and Trading Places
