Fata$$ shoppers treated rudely...

Hey, I work in retail and I give shitty customer service all the time. Of course, I get dickhead customers all the time, too. You know what, maybe those people got shitty customer service because they kept coming in and asking the same godddamn stupid questions. Maybe they got bad customer service not because they're fat, but because they smell like shit. Maybe the clerk is trying to help these people lose weight, but compelling them to go and find their shit for themselves. Maybe the clerk actually realizes that they have no stake in the customer's happiness - that by the end of their shift, they will have made just enough money to buy a chalupa and enough gas to get back home. The only people in that industry who have a stake in the happiness of the customer are the people who never see the customers.

jlb - Funny you say all that because I have alot of respect for the associates that work at your company you guys are among the most knowledgable sales people in the buisness. Usually I get good service at your company.
Thanks, NDC. We actually get a lot of people in here who say the same thing, and as a consumer, I generally agree. Unfortunately though, we also get a segment of the population that tries to take advantage of that. I'm the type of person though that has enough dignity to not tolerate that kind of BS.

I've had somebody ask me if they could buy a cell phone with WIC coupons...

I once had to tell somebody that we couldn't accept a check for prepaid cellular airtime - only cash, credit, or debit. She responded with, "Check ARE cash!" I responded with, "Ok write that check for $1.25 and put it in the pop machine, and THEN tell me if it's cash or not!"

Asian chick at a local chinese restaurant: You order Shrimp Lo Mein. We out of noodle. I bring you Shrimp and Broccoli. You pay $1.25 more.
Me: I ordered Shrimp Lo Mein. I'm not paying more for something I didn't order.
Asian chick: But Shrimp and Broccoli cost more
Me: Its not what I ordered. I'm not paying for something I did not order, much less extra for it.
Asian chick storms off and returns: You take money back and go. You rude.
Me: WTF???

Maybe you should've gave her an order of "Cream of sum yung gai".

Probably not nearly embarrassed as a retail clerk who makes minimum wage.
At any rate... how many suck assed clerk have you personally run across?
Me... 99.9%... and Men's Store Clerks are almost always better.... but not all real good.
I graduated from college 3-4 months ago, and I just found a job in my field. I am working my last week in retail customer service, and I have some thoughts about why people get good service and why they get bad service.

Things to make your shopping experience more enjoyable.
*Note AKAK this is NOT directed at you, I just picked your post to quote and respond to.

1. Don't assume, and don't act like your better than the person behind the register. Karma is a bitch, and it would suck for you to lose your high paying sales job and have to work at Kroger to make ends meat. Some sales clerks are what they appear to be, losers, however some are working there in between jobs, or before they find can get a start after they graduate from college.

2. Don't use coupons. Coupons are a ploy by retailers to get people in the store, they often try to bait and switch, or just confuse the people into buying the wrong item, or buying other items. Bitching at the clerk because the coupon didn't work how you "though it should" does not help you or them. Clerks can rarely override the system to give you the better price, and if they can they might get in trouble for it. Two tips: 1. Ask for the corporate number, and tell them what you think about their coupons, they can actually do something about it. 2. If you HAVE to say something to the clerk be very very nice, and DON'T EXPECT for them to be able to do something for you. If I felt the company was doing something shady with coupons, and the customer was very nice, and said "You know I thought that might have been the item on sale, but its not a big deal don't worry about it" I would almost always change the price, however if they were a dick and demanded or told me to change it, they got nothing. If you try to make their job easier they will go out of their way to help you.

3. DO NOT BITCH ABOUT THE PRICE. Again, corporate number. That sales clerk doesn't give a flying fuck what you think about the prices. They make minimum wage, they cant control the price. A help full hint. You get what you pay for. Don't go to Walmart and expect nice service , and don't go to a nice store and expect walmart prices.

4. Don't act like you are in a hurry, and don't expect the sales clerk to care that you have an important meeting. Most clerks want you out as fast as you want to get out. I will go slower if someone acts like they are in a hurry.

5. Don't write checks. Checks are slow and dead, use them only to pay your bills. You will be treated rudely by the clerk, and the people behind you if you stand there and write out your check, because "you are an important person". Swipe your bank card or pay cash.

6. Don't bitch to the clerk about anything. Just ask for a manager.

7. If you are a thief that is cool with me. I don't care if people steal something from the store. What does piss me off is when someone comes up to me and try to steal something right in front of my face. I had a lady take a 15 dollar item, and rip a 2 dollar clearance tag off another item and try to tell me the 15 dollar item was on clearance for 2 dollars. When you steal like this you make it personal. I would have liked nothing better than to gut her right their at the register and strangle her with her intestine. If you come up to the register PREPARED to argue about the price the clerk knows you are a shit bag thief liar, and you aren't fooling anyone.

8. Be nice and make the clerks job easier, and your shopping experience will be much more enjoyable. Some clerks are dicks, and nothing you can do will change that, but chances are they will treat you how you treat them. If clerks seem rude and unhelpful everywhere you go then chances are they are not the problem.

9. Final point. If you don't like the service go somewhere else. That is the most powerfull thing you can say or do. I hear people bitching about how unhelpful people at Walmart are all the time, but you know what? The cheap bastards keep going back. A retail clerk isn't going to be fired because they were rude to you. No one wants to work retail, people that show up regularly are very hard to find. I have never heard of someone in retail being fired for anything less than theft or vandalism.
