Nick Bosa: ‘There’s no reason we shouldn’t win a national championship’
By Austin Ward
Published on August 28, 2018

COLUMBUS — The top priority is still to be No. 1 for Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa.

That’s a team goal, though. Not where he’s thinking about getting drafted next spring.

The star pass-rushing terror and newly-elected captain refused to point to any individual goals, shot down some of the draft buzz and did everything he could to keep the attention on the Buckeyes collectively after practice on Tuesday. And all of it is with one target Bosa is chasing.

“My No. 1 goal is to win a national championship,” Bosa said. “It’s just, there’s no reason we shouldn’t win a national championship. Sometimes I just look back at who is playing behind me on the defense, and then I see Dwayne [Haskins] throwing to our receiving corps, [see] Mike [Weber] and J.K. [Dobbins] in the backfield and our offensive line that I face every day and know is so much better than the ones I face [in games].

“It’s just like: I don’t know why we shouldn’t be playing for one.”

Cont'd ...

While I think we probably will see some true Freshman, I'm also interested in how they manage the new rules. Do we really want to burn up a game towards their 4 when it might be better to have a guy, say Gill, ready to go in the last 4 games of the season?
A player like Gill you probably don't redshirt anyways since that only comes into play if you think a guy will stay for 5 years. And maybe Gill will, but I doubt it. But if you think he could and you want to redshirt him, I think the best course of action would be to play them 2, maybe 3 games, against bad opponents and then save them for the end of the season in case of injury. You don't want to save them for the end of the season only since that could mean you use 2 or 3 of their games in a game where they get 3 snaps (if it's a game that matters and no injuries in front of them). If you play them vs Rutgers, they get 30 snaps.

For sure.. just will be interesting to see how calculated they are... I mean.. they probably know NPF is good enough to move a schlub from Oregon State around... but.. do they need him available for the scUM game more than they need to know if they're right about moving said schlub around?

Incidentally... does the bowl game count towards the 4? I would think yes, just don't know for sure.
NPF is in the 2 deep as a true freshman and was a top 5 or 10 overall player. He could stay as a senior, but no way in hell he stays as a redshirt senior. Best bet is he leaves after 3 years as a 2 year starter.

I'm under the impression that they'll allow them to play 2 games earlier in the season and "save" 2 for later in the season in case of an injury and if said injury doesn't happen, they'll be ready for bowl game.
Should have kept reading. This is what I would do. MAYBE 3 games early and save 1, but 2 and 2 is more conservative (UM and B1G championship). Unless the hypothetical injury that forces them into playing time is serious, that player would probably be ready for the bowl game/playoff.

There could well be two more games after the B1G championship. But if you get that far and a kid can contribute, the last thing I would worry about is saving his RS.

RYAN DAY, GREG SCHIANO IMPRESSED BY OHIO STATE PLAYERS’ PRESEASON PERFORMANCE DESPITE OFF-FIELD DISTRACTIONS

95777_h.jpg

The Ohio State football team had a team meeting at 7 a.m. last Thursday, about 10 hours after the university announced that head coach Urban Meyer would be suspended for the Buckeyes’ first three games of the season.

That was one of the only times this preseason that interim head coach Ryan Day noticed the off-field drama surrounding the program having an adverse effect on his players.

“They looked a little tired there,” Day said of Thursday morning’s meeting. “I think it wore on them a little bit.”

It’s been a tumultuous month off the field for Ohio State, as Meyer was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 1 – two days before the Buckeyes began fall camp – and has been away from the team ever since, as his suspension came at the conclusion of an investigation by the university into how he handled domestic violence allegations against and other misconduct by former wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

For the most part, though, Day believes the players he is currently in charge of coaching haven’t let that affect them on the field, as he likes what he’s seen from the team in preseason practices leading up to Saturday’s season opener against Oregon State.

“It was amazing,” said Day, who is also Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, of the Buckeyes’ performance this preseason. “Guys were flying around in practice, the energy was good, the coaches kept this thing going. And so I would say 98 percent of the time, from when this started to right now, it's been great.”

OHIO STATE CAPTAINS CREDIT TEAM CULTURE FOR STAYING FOCUSED ON WINNING WITHOUT URBAN MEYER

95794_h_0.jpg

All seven of Ohio State’s newly minted captains met with the media on Tuesday night, and when they were asked about whether the absence of Urban Meyer has affected their preparation for the upcoming season, all of them essentially gave the same answer:

It hasn’t.

Now that’s not to say that Meyer’s presence hasn’t been missed around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, or that the Buckeyes aren’t looking forward to his return from his three-game suspension. But as they went through fall camp and now go through the week preparing for Saturday’s season opener against Oregon State (12:07 p.m., ABC), the captains said they’ve all gone about their business as usual and prepared for the season the way they normally would.

“That’s what Coach would want us to do,” said defensive end Nick Bosa. “Just keep everything normal and keep doing the same routine. Everything the same way, practicing hard and just focusing in on getting better.”

Hayes Gaze and Cannon Fodder — Oregon State

Ryan-Day-Indiana-2-1170x780.jpg

Well well well…It’s time for football again on the Banks of the Olentangy. Like most of you, I am always relieved to end the long offseason and get back into the four best months of the year: college football season. But some years seem to have a longer off-season than others. This year definitely falls into that category.

No matter how much Buckeyes fans wanted it, there just seemed to never be a story this year talking about the Ohio State football program. How does a Top 5 program with one of the most talented rosters and greatest coaching staffs ever assembled completely have not one headline since beating USC in the Cotton Bowl Classic?

How do I insert that record squelch sound everyone just heard? It’s been a long, painful, and at times, absolute disaster of an off-season. But even the most negative and pessimistic fan has to recognize that there are a lot of positives on tap for the 2018 edition of the Best Damn Team in the Land.

For starters, the defensive line returns an All World cast, which appears on paper to be the greatest one ever assembled in Columbus. That is quite a statement, even if you only consider recent history. As my Hayes & Cannon counterpart, Brandon Zimmerman, has pointed out: this team returns two 1,000-yard rushers and an entire receiving corps that combined for nearly 3,000 yards last season. So, with that in mind, here we go.

Hayes Gaze

Ryan Day. What a rock and ROCKSTAR this man has been this offseason. Early in the offseason, Day was promoted by Urban Meyer to Offensive Coordinator and given the role of primary play caller at Ohio State. Day has been rising star in the assistant coaching ranks for a while now, and Meyer has given him the keys to the Maserati. That alone would have made for a great year which could propel Day to the next level at almost any school in the country when he is ready.

Of course, then Big Ten Media Days happened. By all accounts since that day, Coach Day has been a steady beacon in the storm for his Buckeye team. He has run a wonderful fall camp and has the Buckeyes ready to roll through what should be another fantastic season. The real test will start this Saturday versus Oregon State, and continue through Rutgers and TCU.

But if Day can guide the Buckeyes to a 3-0 start, I would expect to hear his name on every coaching search list next offseason. Personally, I would love for him to be the next “Head Coach in Waiting” in Columbus. However, how often does that work out? Too often, the HCIW becomes a coach, just not at the school who originally applied it.

But have no doubt, Coach Day will be a Head Coach very soon, and a very good one at that.
