I enjoyed The Social Network even though I haven't a clue as to how much it reflects the reality behind Facebook and such. However, there is the following confirmation on a part of the film.

*emphasis mine.

http://money.cnn.com/2011/07/20/technology/summers_winklevoss_facebook.fortune/index.htm?iid=Popular

What did Larry Summers really think of the Winklevoss twins?
"Rarely, have I encountered such swagger, and I tried to respond in kind," the former president of Harvard said in an interview at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss were at Harvard at the same time that Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, and they had come to Summers for help in their fight for a piece of the action.
Summers dismissed them, a scene dramatized in the movie the "Social Network."
Summers didn't try to dispel the portrayal.
"One of the things you learn as a college president is that if an undergraduate is wearing a tie and jacket on Thursday afternoon at three o'clock, there are two possibilities. One is that they're looking for a job and have an interview; the other is that they are an a**hole. This was the latter case."

The term 'poke' has been around for decades. I saw the term used on dial-up BBSes back in the 80s as a question/answer to see if anybody else is online at the time ("Is there anybody out there?" "Poke poke"), and it's been used in more modern chat services, such as IRC ("/me pokes DubCoffman62 with a stick").

Since the term "poke" sounded homo in chatrooms with a bunch of dudes, there were alternates such as "slaps with a fish."

So yeah, the Facebook poke is the same thing. Zuckerburg was a hacker and familiar with IRC, and the poke is the de facto way to find out if somebody else is online in realtime (as opposed to logged in but away from the keyboard, looking at another application, or otherwise 'invisible').

Thank you for clearing that up

He should explain that to people who think it's awkward flirting. :p
