Face it...This has been a special season.

The season has been more disappointing than special. actually, I dont think its even close. We lost to 2 great teams, and they were close games, but a loss is a loss. Did we beat anybody this year that was any good? scUM had 4 losses. MSU was terrible. I guess a ND win would validate how good our team is, but it still doesnt feel like we played the best when it mattered. The loss to Texas will stick in my mind for awhile, because it was a Cooper type loss - losing when you play better than the other team.

I needed my Tibor fix for the day. Thanks!

so how can this season not be better than 1995?
Actually, even if the 2005 Bucks win the Fiesta Bowl, their record (10-2) won't be as good as the 1995 team (11-2). So, by record, the 1995 team was better, not worse.

Oh yeah, just because they don't give out a trophy for being #4 in the BCS, that doesn't mean this season still wasn't special. By the way, they do give out a trophy for a Fiesta Bowl win...
They probably also give out a trophy for the winner of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl....

I'm interested in national championships, period. I can enjoy the games and the players and the plays along the way, but in terms of being "special", it's NC or nothing for me.

OK, Is This Year Going to be Better than Last Year

Last year was incredible!

I love being a Buckeye. We had an awesome team and lost two games we could have won.

Based on how we played in the Fiesta, I think we could have beaten USC (most people thought I was crazy for saying it).

So, is this year going to be better than last year?

:oh: :io:

Wow, that's a little rough, isn't it? Sure, you didn't come out and say it, but you make it sound like a non-NC year is a ho-hum season or even a disappointment.

I agree that the "what if" game is popular with the 2005 season... What if Hamby caught the ball... What if Houston nailed the long FG... What if the Bucks could score TDs instead of FGs... What if Smith didn't throw the INT in Happy Valley... And the most popular of all: What if Smith didn't miss the beginning of the season.

But, it was a great season with great Buckeye legends that we will never see in the Scarlet and Gray again. There were wins over Michigan and Notre Dame IN THE SAME SEASON! There was an explosive offense that put 40 points on the board on a regular basis during the second half of the season. There was one of the best defenses that I've ever seen with unselfish players who you just have to love. I'd hate to write that off as anything but special.

2005 was no more special than 2003, 1998, 1996, 1995, 1979, 1975, 1974, which were all years in which the Buckeyes performed quite well, but ultimately end up as losers. 2002 was truly special because the Bucks won it all, fair and square, on the field, no "what ifs". I guess that I just have high standards.

I think it would be more accurate to declare "I have the highest standards possible!" :wink2:

Stupid comment considering that in 2005 we beat our biggest rival and didn't in 96 and 95 and 03.

I think 2005 has to be not anywhere near as high as a NC, but much higher than the "typical" good season in that we beat the archrivals, and stuck it to the program that everyone in the media loves and all the opposing fans hate, and stuck it to the "genius" on the way to a NYD bowl win, after a come-from-behind thriller against the Wolverweenies. We also shared a conference title and lost 2 games to teams that finished in the top 3, by a single score apiece...yes, that was somewhat of a disappointment, but it was a great season.

different folks have different ways to define the season... for me it was a very special season for these reasons:

1. B10 Champ
2. Fiesta Bowl (BCS) win
3. Beat scUM and ND top two winning programs
4. the way we beat them.. I would never forget that scUM game.
5. All the special players... AJ Hawk, Kudla, Carpenter all of them.
6. last but not least....It's Buckeye Football...every time they play....win or lose.. it's just great to see

the National Championship is a myth, which is why the NCAA dosn't recognize D-1A National Championships. Undefeated is special. Auburn '04 was special. they didn't 'win the National Championship,' yet they beat every team on their schedule. it's like USC's '03 title. were the Trojans suddenly more special than LSU simply because the AP arbitrarily decided to award them a title? or how could Oklahoma, who didn't even win the Big XII be allowed to play for the 'National Championship.' i'll tell you one thing, a team can't be a NATIONAL Champ if they aren't even conference champs.

personally, given 9-3 Earl's record, and the inevitable late season swoons of the Cooper Era, any Ohio State team that beats TSUN and wins the Bowl game is special in my book. IIRC, before Tressel came aboard, beating TSUN and winning the bowl game in the same season had happened only three times since 1968.

Man, are you right on! Last season was some season, and--well, Jim Tressel deserves all the credit we can give him.

Not to be dark, but the untimely loss of Randy Walker has made me appreciate JT all the more.

Comparing his record with Coop's, we should all ask ourselves where we would be without him.
