Face it...This has been a special season.

Another question: How many of you thought that the Buckeyes would be undefeated this year? According to our pre-season poll, almost 50% of you, with another 30% voting for 11-1. A 10-2 finish should seem pretty disappointing right now....
I thought that they would go undefeated and be in the NC, but beating Michigan and seeing how bright the future of this program could be took alot of the sting out of the two losses.
I think it's more how we lossed the games that was the most disappointing thing.

Michigan finished the season #17 that year... losing to them was horrendous. Losing to Texas/PSU hurts, but is not nearly as embarrassing.

We have continued our dominance over UM, and may succeed in putting ND in their place (which will reap huge dividends). Both will be invaluable achievements. True we have allowed a regional power, PSU, to be reborn, but they will have to rebuild somewhat next year.

I see the comparisons, but I think this season will be sweeter if we beat ND. We also have improved a lot as the season has progressed this year, whereas we fell apart down the stretch in 95.

Great Seasons

1995 was a great season, but that scUM loss really tainted it.
1998...Damn if it wasn't for that MSU game.

This year, if we had just had all cylinders running at the beginning of the year, I think we could have challenged USC.

Remember, most of us thought we didn't have a chance versus Miami in the NC game. Miami had Dorsey, McGahee, KWjr and some other incredible players. We had Doss, Wilhelm, Fox, Will Smith, Nickey, Cie Grant, Will Allen, Krenzel, MoC, and on and on.

Despite the lack of turnovers, I think our D this year is comparable to 2003. We're the only team to hold Tejas to under 40 points. If we had more offensive production, we could have won that game. Now we have the offense in place. We're dangerous and it's really fun to watch.

It's kind of funny reading this - in 1995, the Buckeyes, under John Cooper, played Notre Dame (win), Washington (win), Boston College (win), Pitt (win), Penn State (win), the rest of the Big Ten schedule (all wins), then lost to Michigan in The Game and Tennessee in the bowl game to finish 11-2. The Bucks played 8 ranked teams and finished 6th in both polls, plus had a Heisman winner (Eddie George) and a Lombardi winner (Orlando Pace) and a Biletnikoff winner (Terry Glenn).

How many of you thought that 1995 was a "special" season? I guess the timing of the losses had something to do with it (it always seems to hurt more when OSU loses to Michigan and in bowl games), but 2005 is basically the same thing as 1995: even if the Bucks beat ND, it's a 2-loss season with no hope for an NC.

Yes, I agree that JT has done a lot of good for the program, but let's be a little bit realistic about this season. Top 5 finishes are nice, but they don't give out trpohies for them.

Maybe 2006 will be our year (and there's no reason why it shouldn't be).

1995 just shows what kind of big-game choke Hee-yuk Cooper was, especially with the NFL talent he had, and this year shows just how great a improve-the-team-through-the-season coach Tressel is. Don't forget we should've won the Texas game if not for the Hamby drop and/or the A. Smith missed tackle in the Texas end zone on our kickoff. 1995 was a 2-loss season with losses to a mediocre Michigan team and a bowl loss. This year is a 2-loss season with a great comeback win over Michigan at their place, along with our losses being to the #2 and #3 BCS teams, plus a chance at playing Notre Dame in a BCS bowl, so how can this season not be better than 1995?

Oh yeah, just because they don't give out a trophy for being #4 in the BCS, that doesn't mean this season still wasn't special. By the way, they do give out a trophy for a Fiesta Bowl win...

Definately. The 1995 team (most people don't know this) was the most decorated CFB team in history. Think about that: it had the Heisman, Lombardi, Biletnikoff, and Walter Camp award winners all on the same team AND in the same season!! Think about that ..

Everyone I know (OSU fans or not) were calling that the best CFB team they ever saw, up until the scUM game. It was uinimaginable that the '95 team could get beat. I was even ultra-confident going into Ann Arbor that season, even with Coop as the coach.

How you could possibly lose TWO games with that team still shocks me to this day. You really could give Coop the '72 Dolphins or the '85 Bears and he'd find a way to lose to scUM.

I'm guessing you didn't know any Nebraska fans. They were justifiably proud of their own 1995 team, which still has a legitamite claim to be in the 'best team ever' discussion.

And I loved our 1995 team, but I didn't believe them to be the best Buckeye team I'd ever seen. I do realize that you weren't born in 1973. :wink2:

Nebraska 1995 was the best team I ever saw, but 1995 OSU would've also had a claim to that, had we run the table. Nebraska didn't play a soul in '95, and we had to go through 8 ranked teams that season.

Nope, born two years later. The best Buckeye team I ever saw was unquestionably 2002.

This has been a special season, and gives us some optimisim for the future. What is the difference between us and the 3 teams above us. They started August knowing who their no. 1 QB was and could spend every practice refining their offense. tOSU basically had to prepare two QB's, with vastly different talents, so the team was slow to come around offensively. Our running game at the end of the year is light years from where it was in Sept. If there was only one QB would the offense have reached their potential sooner, who knows? Still every season has its ifs, 2002 was magical because we had the talent and preparation, which helped in the close games. To outsiders it looked like luck when in the end the Bucks just came through thanks to the players making plays.Krenzel,Gamble,Clarett et al. made numerous game winning plays. To me 1972 was a magical season. Archie in the first year freshman were elligible, comes off the bench to set the all time single game rushing record and establish himself as an all time great. Yes we got pounded in the Rose Bowl.but with the upset of Mich. it was still magical.

Ahhh, those were the days. From 1968 to 1975, the Bucks dominated, with 1973 being the best. Four games away from possibly four more national championships in that time frame. That being said, Tressel is putting together a nice run. Three BCS games and a national title in four years is quite an accomplishment. Not only that, we look primed for future runs as well.

The season has been more disappointing than special. actually, I dont think its even close. We lost to 2 great teams, and they were close games, but a loss is a loss. Did we beat anybody this year that was any good? scUM had 4 losses. MSU was terrible. I guess a ND win would validate how good our team is, but it still doesnt feel like we played the best when it mattered. The loss to Texas will stick in my mind for awhile, because it was a Cooper type loss - losing when you play better than the other team.

I guess I am old fashioned...Even if Michigan had 10 loses on the year and we beat them that year it still means we had a pretty damn good year. Beating Michigan is always tough regardless of their record on the year. So in my eyes it was a good year in large part to us beating Michigan!!

Pretty subjective argument there Sloopy. I'll offer up some counterpoints for discussion. Keep in mind that early on there were far fewer awards ...

In 1972 Nebraska had the Heisman, Lombardi, Outland and Walter Camp

In 1973 Penn State had the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp

In 1975 Ohio State had the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp

In 1976 Pittsburgh had the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp

In 1975 Texas had the Heisman, Davey O'Brien and Outland

In 1978 Oklahoma had the Heisman, Davey O'Brien and Outland and Walter Camp

In 1979 USC had the Heisman, Lombardi, Maxwell and Walter Camp

In 1980 Pittsburgh had the Lombardi, Maxwell, Outland and Walter Camp

In 1983 Nebraska had the Heisman, Lombardi, Maxwell, Outland and Walter Camp

In 1984 Boston College hadthe Heisman, Davey O'Brien and Maxwell and Walter Camp

In 1986 Miami (FL) had the Heisman, Davey O'Brien, Maxwell, Walter Camp and the Sammy Baugh

In 1987 Syracuse had the Davey O'Brien, Johnny Unitas, Maxwell, Sammy Baugh and 5 COY Awards

In 1992 Miami (FL) has the Heisman, Davey O'Brien, Johnny Unitas, Walter Camp and Maxwell

In 1991 Michigan had the Butkus, Heisman, Walter Camp, and Maxwell

In 1993 FSU has the Heisman, Johnny Unitas, Walter Camp, Davey O'Brien, Maxwell

In 1994 Penn State had the Biletnikoff, Davey O'Brien, Sammy Baugh, Maxwell and 2 Coach of the Year Awards

In 1995 Ohio State had the Biletnikoff, Doak Walker, Heisman, Lombardi, Maxwell, and Walter Camp

In 1996 Florida had the Davey O'Brien, Heisman, Unitas, Maxwell and Thorpe, Walter Camp

In 1997 Michigan had the Bronko Nagurski, Chuck Bednarik, Heisman, Walter Camp, Thorpe and 4 Coach of the Year Awards

In 1998 Texas had the Doak Walker, Heisman, Maxwell, Walter Camp and AP POY

In 1999 Wisconsin had the Doak Walker, Heisman, Maxwell, Walter Camp and AP POY

In 2000 FSU had the Davie O'Brien, Heisman, Unitas, Lombardi, and Sammy Baugh

In 2002 Iowa had the Davey O'Brien, Mackey, Groza, AP Player of the Year and 1 COY award

In 2003 Oklahoma had the Nagurski, Butkus, Bednarik, Davey O'Brien, Heisman, Lombardi, Thorpe, AP Player of the Year and 2 COY awards ... DAMN!

Finished (for now)! Not such a slam dunk argument for OSU being the most decorated team in CFB history.
