Two years ago this week, he authored a Hollywood ending to Ohio State?s first Big Ten season under coach Thad Matta. Now, Matt Sylvester is living it.
"Hollywood never sleeps," he text-messaged one night last week from his new address on the West Coast. "HAHAHAHAHAHA. I?ll call you tomorrow." Sylvester, whose Ohio State career ended last season, has been working the past two months as an extra on the set of Will Ferrell?s latest movie, Semi-Pro. The comedy, also starring Woody Harrelson (White Men Can?t Jump), is set in the final year of the American Basketball Association and follows Jackie Moon (Ferrell), the owner-coach-player of the fictional Flint Michigan Tropics, in his attempt to lead his team to the NBA.

Ex-Buckeye rubs elbows with stars

March 6, 2007
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Ohio State player Matt Sylvester is working as an extra in a Will Ferrell movie in Hollywood. Sylvester was supposed to be Ferrell's stunt double for the 1970s-set movie comedy ''Semi-Pro,'' but at 6-7, he is 4 inches taller than Ferrell. Now Sylvester hopes to get a scene in the movie.
Sylvester, whose last season with the Buckeyes was last year, can thank his mother for the role. She found the casting call on the Internet. The only requirements were basketball experience, no tattoos and no earrings because players in the 1970s didn't have those.
''I figured I'd take a three-day vacation, check out a Lakers game and come back home,'' said Sylvester, who had been working out in Cincinnati while recovering from his latest back surgery. ''And here I am.''
Sylvester said he has had fun making the movie.

Is Matt Sylvester in Semi-Pro?

I remember reading something during the early production of Semi-Pro about Matt trying out for a nonspeaking role as a player on an opposing team, just wondering if anything ever came of that?

Matt was one of my students at Moeller. Nice kid, funny, smarter than he let on, - a bit full of himself - but that often goes with being a teen ager and a better than average athlete. As a frosh he played an important role in winning the state title.

My brother went to school with him in grade school at Loveland, and he has oh so fond memories of Sylvester.
