Big Ten Preview: Ex-Ohio State star Jim Jackson scouts the league
Jeff Eisenberg - September 14, 2011
Each Wednesday until the college basketball season starts, an ex-player will help The Dagger preview his former conference. Former Ohio State star and current Big Ten Network analyst Jim Jackson joined me this week to provide a scouting report on the Big Ten:
1. Who's your pick to win the Big Ten next season?
I'd go with Ohio State. They're bringing back a lot, which of course starts with Jared Sullinger. The dominant freshman year he had says a lot about him and his talent. You bring back some experience at point guard with Aaron Craft and at wing with William Buford. You sprinkle in Shannon Scott and Amir Williams, some of the freshmen they have coming in. So you look on paper, you'd say Ohio State's the favorite, but Michigan State , Wisconsin and Illinois will all be tough.

Jimmy leads the upstart Mavericks with 27 points. But it is not enough to stop Hakeem's 41.

Q: Which team do you expect will win the conference?
A: Right now, I?d pick Ohio State.
Q: Which team will surprise us the most this season?
A: The team you need to look out for is Iowa. Last year at home, they beat a good Purdue team and it came down to the wire against Ohio State and Wisconsin. They have a good core group that believes that they can win.
Q: Which Big Ten freshman do you expect to be this season?s standouts?
A: Cody Zeller (Indiana), a McDonald?s All-American and Branden Dawson (Michigan State) another McDonald?s All-American. Those two will see significant playing time from the beginning.
Q: Many of the historically successful basketball teams in the conference are coming off of unsuccessful seasons. Which, if any, of those teams do you predict to bounce back?
A: Michigan State had a lot of stuff going on with dismissals and injuries last year. This year, they are a different team. Draymond Green will be the leader. They don?t have the star player, but a great group of guys that believe in the system and in themselves.
Q: What impact do you see Nebraska having on the conference this season?
A: The good news for them is that they have five of their seven leading scorers returning which makes them a veteran team. Also, teams are unfamiliar with them and vice versa. There is the unknown out there for both sides. It also gives them an opportunity to participate in a great basketball conference.
Q: How will the NBA lockout affect the decision for student-athletes to stay at the collegiate level for more than one year?
A: I don?t think it will have an impact. It may have had an impact on a player like Jared Sullinger last year, but moving forward to this year, it should be resolved.
Q: Is there anything else that you?re looking forward to this season?
A: I?m excited to see how Robbie Hummel recovers and if he?s healthy. I?d love to see him end his Purdue career on a high note.
Analyze this: Jackson's been schooled by NBA player-turned-broadcaster dad

Sometime around Traevon Jackson's sophomore year at Westerville South High School in central Ohio, the one-on-one games against his famous father came to an abrupt end.
Trying to figure out the reason why requires sorting through a He Said, He Said ? and even then the answer's not clear.
"He stopped because he didn't want to get beat," said Traevon, a freshman guard on the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team. "We played ?21' and he'd back me down all the time. And it was make it, take it, so I couldn't get the ball back. And then he never played me again after that. He said he was done."
Jim Jackson, the former Ohio State and NBA standout who now is a television analyst, says his son's version of the story was missing some key details.
"I wouldn't play him because he would get so mad because he couldn't beat me," the elder Jackson said. "He would get so mad and so irritated, so that's why I stopped playing him."

Jackson poses with LSU's Shaquille O'Neal and Georgetown center Alonzo Mourning. Jackson would be chosen fourth (behind O'Neal, Mourning and Christian Laettner) by the Mavericks in the NBA draft.
