Dez Wells taking 5-school tour
Updated: August 31, 2012
ESPN.com news services

Dezmine Wells, the recently expelled Xavier forward who began a recruiting tour Thursday at Kentucky and continued it Friday at Memphis, will decide on a destination by Tuesday from a short list that also includes Maryland, Ohio State and Oregon, a source told ESPN.com's Dave Telep.

Wells added the Buckeyes and Ducks as possible considerations Friday morning, the source told Telep.

The Strange Case of Dezmine Wells

The good news? Dezmine Wells' name has been cleared, and rather forcefully, by a grand jury. But that doesn't change his current predicament: finding a new place to play basketball in a rather short period of time, writes Eamonn Brennan. Blog

Kentucky, however, was dropped after an academic deadline passed Thursday night with Wells still unready to commit.

From Memphis, Wells will leave Saturday for Maryland before going to Ohio State on Sunday and Oregon on Monday for visits that last five to six hours.

A grand jury rejected sexual-assault charges against Wells on Tuesday. But Xavier announced the sophomore would remain expelled from the school, saying it was standing by the University Conduct Board's decision to expel the sophomore for what it termed "a serious violation of the student code."

Wells started 32 games as a freshman last season and was the team's fourth-leading scorer while making the Atlantic 10's all-rookie team. He would have been the only returning starter for a team that reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. The forward averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds.

He was suspended for four games for his role in an on-court brawl with rival Cincinnati during the season. Wells was among four Xavier players suspended, with Cincinnati also suspending four players.

Feeling a bit judgmental, but there has to be enough to the story for Xavier to stick to him being expelled, throw in the brawl and that doesn't help his character. I'd love to add talent to the roster, but not someone that might be a liability down the road.

Agree, plus we have Loving coming next year and they look like they might play the same position. Memphis:huh:

Wells is more realistically a shooting guard. I think he'd fit in well with the Buckeyes, assuming due diligence on the acquitted charges meets Matta's approval. He had a pretty impressive freshman campaign at the X.

I'm not sure why they decided they should bring him in in the first place. Is Matta that confident there aren't any quality SG/SF types out there that he can get in the 2013 class? Wells was very productive in his one year at Xavier, but there are other guys who can score 10 points a game that don't get expelled over sexual assault allegations or get in a highly publicized fight where they're on camera throwing punches at the other team. Wells was a big part of that UC-Xavier fight last season, and I am surprised that Matta wanted to bring him in because I never thought he was a coach who condoned that sort of behavior.

Dezmine Wells and the eligibility issue

The NCAA will have a potentially precedent-setting case if it decides to grant expelled Xavier forward Dezmine Wells immediate eligibility.
Wells took a visit Thursday to Kentucky. If he doesn't commit to the Wildcats right away, according to a source, he likely would visit Maryland during the weekend. Terrapins assistant coach Bino Ranson was on the Xavier staff while Wells was being recruited to the school. Memphis is also very much in the mix.
Each school would try to get Wells a waiver so he could play this season, despite the fall semester already starting. But the NCAA has a clear rule on this matter. NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn said schools have the ability to file a waiver to allow immediate competition due to special circumstances.
The rule is 14.5.1.2, detailing disciplinary suspension:
A student who transfers to any NCAA institution from a collegiate institution while the student is disqualified or suspended from the previous institution for disciplinary reasons (as opposed to academic reasons) must complete one calendar year of residence at the certifying institution. (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97)
Osburn said the NCAA staff would review the waiver and consider several factors, including what "caused the dismissal from school and the results of any institutional appellate processes."
But would the NCAA grant immediate eligibility to a player who was expelled from another school? That is the question. It would certainly put Xavier in a poor light if that were to occur.

Is Maryland the Team to Beat for Xavier Transfer Dezmine Wells?

According to a report from the Washington Post, Xavier transfer Dezmine Wells is down to three schools and a decision is expected within the next two days.
Wells, who was expelled from the university a few weeks ago, took a number of visits late last week and into this Labor Day weekend. The report indicates that Wells is expected to choose between Memphis, Maryland and Oregon.
Kentucky and head coach John Calipari hosted Wells last week, but due to a scheduling conflict and no immediate commitment from the 6-foot-5 wing, the two parted ways on a potential addition. Ohio State, also expected to host Wells this past weekend, cancelled their trip due to similar circumstances.
Wells visited Memphis on Friday before heading to Maryland on Saturday and then Oregon on Sunday.

Most Of Md. Basketball Star Dez Wells’ Suit Claims Against Xavier University Survive

Most of the claims in a lawsuit by a former Xavier University basketball player accusing the school and its president of damaging his reputation by expelling him for what he says was a false rape accusation will proceed to trial, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

Dez Wells’ federal lawsuit, filed in August, included 11 claims against the university and its president, Father Michael Graham, including sex discrimination, intentional infliction of emotional distress, libel for injury to his reputation and negligence.

After a request by the university and Graham to dismiss many of the claims, federal Judge Arthur Spiegel allowed most of them to remain.
