With all of the comments after this one, mostly wishing DT well on his post-Ohio State career, I had one question...

I haven't seen anywhere that he signed with an agent. Did he? If not, could he be testing the waters to see what interest there is...and if there's not, he'd still have the option to return, right?

there is talk about an agent in this article
Deshaun Thomas almost made himself available for the NBA draft after two years at Ohio State.

After three, he has decided to wait no longer.

The all-Big Ten forward, who averaged a conference-leading 19.8 points in 37 games this season, will forgo his final season of eligibility with the Buckeyes and make himself available for the NBA draft, the school’s athletic department announced yesterday.

Thomas was a third-team Associated Press All-American and finished ninth in balloting for the Wooden Award, given to the national player of the year by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

He finished ninth in career points at Ohio State with 1,630.

“My three years at Ohio State have been the best years of my life,” Thomas said in the news release. “I have grown tremendously as an individual and as a basketball player. I intend to return to finish my degree, but I believe that now is the best opportunity to pursue my dream and begin my career as a professional basketball player.”

Thomas is not projected as a first-round pick in NBA mock drafts by Chad Ford of ESPN and Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com. Ford has him 48th and Givony 57th in their latest rankings of the top 100 prospects.

But Thomas, who did not respond to requests for an interview, might have thought he could do no more at Ohio State to improve his stock with NBA scouts.

He is projected as a small forward as a pro but played power forward for three seasons in college, which prevented him from showing whether he can guard or handle the ball against quicker and more-athletic wing players. He would have played the same position next season at Ohio State.

Thomas’ return also would have created a problem for coach Thad Matta, who, after LaQuinton Ross’ performance late in the season, will want to give him more playing time next season. Ross, whose potential is probably greater than Thomas’, could not play alongside him other than in a small lineup because Ross also has deficiencies defending and handling the ball against smaller, quicker wing players.

Matta did not respond to a text message seeking comment on Thomas’ departure.

“To see Deshaun grow into the man he has become has been amazing,” Matta said in the athletic department’s release. “His accomplishments on the floor speak for themselves, but I am just as proud of him and what he has done off the floor. We recruited him offering the opportunity to grow as a person and player, and that is exactly what happened. “I know there is much more in store for him in the future, and I am proud to have been able to coach him.”

What was really strange to me about this is after the win over Arizona they were interviewing Thomas on the court after the game and the guy said something like "With this being your last rodeo" and Thomas corrected him saying "I am only a Junior"...why even correct him because this was your last rodeo since your going Pro.

This will take Ohio State from being Big 10 favorite next year to who knows. I know Ross will step in but still hurts as a fan.

Can't blame him though I don't think know if where he is going to be picked and what kind of playing time he will get next year will be worth it. Most come out early end up doing nothing that 1st year but they make the money.

I don't think the two (correcting a small technicality and going into the draft) are connected. You may be thinking too hard. :tongue2:

Ohio State men's basketball: Thomas comfortable with entering draft

Deshaun Thomas said he asked himself the same question he did last year in weighing whether to leave Ohio State early and make himself available for the NBA draft.

Could he improve his stock with pro scouts by returning for another season? This time, his answer was the opposite, and Ohio State announced last Friday that he is leaving.

?I think I made the best decision this year,? Thomas said this week by phone from Indianapolis, where he has relocated to prepare for a professional basketball career.

Coach Thad Matta did not try to persuade Thomas to return for his senior season when they met last week, Thomas said, but he did ask if the player was prepared for whatever happens.

?He was like, ?What if you do fall into that second round? Are you willing to make that kind of money and still progress??  ? Thomas said.

?I was just like, people see me in the first round or falling into the second round, but I have great confidence in myself, and I?m a first-rounder. I believe that. I know that.?

Commentary: Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas has patience, maturity to make it in the NBA

Former OSU junior forward Deshaun Thomas goes for the basket during a game against Michigan State on Feb. 24 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU won, 68-60.

It?s been almost two weeks since Ohio State men?s basketball forward Deshaun Thomas announced he is leaving early to enter the 2013 NBA Draft.

Being one of Thomas? biggest supporters this past season, my heart sank when I heard about his decision, but it is one that I fully understand and respect.

Something that I am struggling to understand is all the so-called ?experts? saying that he will not have much success at the next level.

Some say he is not quick enough to defend at an elite level and earn playing time. Some say he is too selfish and takes too many bad shots that will frustrate coaches. Some say that he is a ?me first? player who will get frustrated when he does not get shots. This madness needs to stop now.

Thomas led the Big Ten in scoring this past season at 19.8 points per game and scored in double digits in every game. He shot 83 percent from the free throw line, 34 percent from behind the arc and an impressive 45 percent overall. Thomas made all of that happen while being the main scoring option on a limited offensive team and thus getting the opposing team?s best defense thrown at him every game.

Former Ohio State star Deshaun Thomas refuses to give NBA team his phone number at combine
By Jason Lloyd Published: May 16, 2013

CHICAGO: If the San Antonio Spurs choose Deshaun Thomas in next month’s NBA draft, they might have a hard time reaching him to tell him. That’s because when the Spurs asked the former Ohio State star for his phone number Wednesday night, he refused to give it to them.

Thomas said teams asked him plenty of difficult and interesting questions during his interview process at the combine. But the most interesting, he said, was the fact the Spurs’ first question was for his cell phone number and his e-mail address. He gave them the e-mail, but not the phone number.

“I can’t go around giving it out to everyone,” Thomas said Thursday with a laugh. “Now if they want to draft me, I’d be happy to give it to them.”

Thomas is projected as a second-round pick, although he’s still hopeful he can sneak into the first round. He departed Ohio State after averaging 19.8 points and 5.9 assists during his junior year to lead the Big Ten in scoring.

Thomas returned to Indiana after the NCAA tournament and has been working on getting in better shape. He said he trimmed his body fat from “11 or 12 percent down to 8.5 or 9.”

“I believe I can be that late first round pick,” Thomas said. “I have confidence. But all I’ve got to do is keep working. As long as I can feel like when I walk out of that gym that I worked hard, I’ll leave it in God’s hands and everything will take care of itself.”

Thomas has been joined in his workouts by Greg Oden, who is attempting a comeback to the NBA next season.

“He looks unbelievable,” Thomas said. “He’s running, lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he’s ready to go. For a big 7-footer, that’s all he does, running and getting in shape. He’s looking right.”

Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas thinks he could be a 1st-round pick in NBA Draft 2013
By Mary Schmitt Boyer, The Plain Dealer
May 16, 2013

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas thinks he could be a first-round pick in the NBA draft on June 27 - if everything goes right.

The 6-7 junior forward led the Big Ten in scoring at 19.8 points per game before announcing his intention to turn pro. He is projected as a second-round pick at this point.

"I believe I can be that late first-round pick,'' Thomas said at the NBA combine on Thursday morning. "I have confidence. But all I've got to do is keep working, do what I can do. As long as I can feel like when I can walk out of that gym that I worked hard, I'll leave it in God's hands and everything will take care of itself.''
Asked if it would be a slight to be second-rounder after his career at Ohio State, Thomas said, "It's all about getting in there and being with the right team, having the right team pick you and going from there. Are you going to work out? Are you going to keep going? That's what my motivation is. Get in there, work out, try to work your way up and be great.''

There are questions about Thomas' effort when he's not scoring, but he's ready to answer those on the floor.

"I can bring great energy,'' he said. "I can bright the toughness, the competitiveness, the will to win. Everybody says, 'Yeah, you can bring the scoring but what else can you do?'

"I can go out there and get the extra points, extra rebounds, extra assists, just the little things. I learned that from playing at Ohio State. It's not all about the scoring. It's all about the effort and doing the little things to help your team win.''

Ohio State's Thomas wants to show more than scoring at combine
By Colleen Kane Tribune reporter
May 16, 2013

Deshaun Thomas found his comfort zone in his jump shot Thursday during his workout at the NBA draft combine in Chicago.

Scoring comes naturally to the 6-foot-7 Ohio State forward, who led the Big Ten with a 19.8 points per game average in his junior season. He thinks he can translate that prowess to the NBA.

?When we got to the jumpers, I went 8-for-10, 8-for-10 again,? Thomas said. ?I shot real well. ...

?Some guys said I could be a great scorer coming off the bench, that energy guy. I can be that.?

But Thomas, projected to be a second-round pick, says he also wants to show he?s focused on improving his rebounding and defense this week. He averaged 5.9 rebounds this season.

?You?ve got to do the same thing (you always do), but just show more,? Thomas said. ?I did on the defensive end. I moved my feet real well and contested shots. Those are the things you need to focus on because they already know you can score.?

Thomas said he has 10 workouts set up with NBA teams in the coming month, including one with the Bulls in early June. He said he thinks playing in the Big Ten for three seasons helped him to prepare for the next level.

?I?m very prepared, strength-wise,? Thomas said. ?The Big Ten is a physical conference, and that helps you at the next level, competing with the big guys.?

Thomas not concerned about uncertain future
Former Bishop Luers standout just wants NBA opportunity
By Tom Davis of The News-Sentinel
Thursday, May 16, 2013

CHICAGO ? Deshaun Thomas isn?t overanalyzing his life right now. Just about every aspect of his existence is in flux.

He?s living temporarily in a hotel in Indianapolis, where he is training in preparation for next month?s NBA Draft. He doesn?t have any clue as to where he?ll be selected in that draft. He doesn?t even know if he?ll be selected, and if he is, where his next hometown will be could be any of 30 different cities from California to Boston.

There is even the question as to what position on the basketball court Thomas will best fit.

There are an abundance of questions, with few answers, but he?s carrying a lassiez faire attitude and a never-ending smile as he soaks up every moment.

The former Bishop Luers High School star participated in the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago on Thursday and the Ohio State forward did what he has always done throughout his career, he shot the ball a lot, as well as pretty well.

?I shot the ball real well,? Thomas said. ?When we got to the jumpers (drill), I was 8 for 10, then 8 for 10 again. I felt real comfortable.?

Thomas raises eyebrows at NBA combine
May 17, 2013

usatsi_7079018.jpg

(Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports)

CHICAGO -- While most players here speak of their goal to be a lottery pick, Deshaun Thomas has lower expectations.

?I believe I can be a late first-round pick,? said the 6-5 small forward who left Ohio State after his junior season. ? I have confidence. All I got to do is keep working.?

A knockdown shooter who can play in transition as well, Thomas? rapidly improves physique has wowed at least several scouts here. He measured at 6-5, 220 pounds with a 6-10 wingspan and 9.1% body fat. He can take contact and still get off his shot. He's 6-7 in shoes.

?Worked on it a lot. Got my body fat down. It was at 11 or 12,? he said. ?I worked on flexibility, getting stronger, being explosive out there.?

Thomas hasn't interviewed with the Wizards, who need a quick-hitting scorer like Thomas to help the NBA?s worst scoring team (93.2 points per game) but ideally in a bigger package to play in the low post. The Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs already have talked with him.

Thomas averaged 19.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, shot 44.5% from the field and 34.4% from three-point range in his final season with the Buckeyes. He was an 83.4% foul shooter and gets to the line almost five times per game.

The Spurs, who have won four NBA championships since 1999, are noted for finding diamonds in the rough.

?I can bring great energy, the toughness, the competitiveness, the will to win,? Thomas said. ?Extra rebounds, extra assists, just the little things. I learned that from playing at Ohio State. It?s not all about the scoring. It?s about the effort plays.?

Thomas is aware he might drop beneath the first round. He?ll be OK with that, too. The Wizards have two picks there.

When Thomas interviewed with the Spurs, he refused to give them his cell phone number. So he just might.

?It?s all about getting in there and being with the right team pick you and going from there,? he said. ?If it?s the second round, get in there work out, work your way up and try to be great.?

CHICAGO ? Deshaun Thomas has been a prolific scorer at every level of basketball.

The Ohio State small forward knows, however, that NBA teams are looking to see a more well-rounded game.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pounder is expected to be a late first-round pick or an early second-round selection. The Cavaliers have two picks atop the second round ? Nos. 31 and 33 overall ? and could target Thomas.

The Indiana native would love to return to Ohio.

?I think about it,? he said. ?It would be fine going back to Ohio and playing with the Cavs. Whatever?s the best fit. I wouldn?t mind going back. Everybody always tweets: ?I hope you go to the Cavs. Come back to Ohio.? It would be great if the Cavs pick me up.?

Of course, he has no control over where he?s headed.

In his mind ? like most players at the NBA draft combine ? he thinks he?ll be a first-round pick.

?I believe I can be a late first-round pick,? he said. ?I have confidence. But all I?ve got to do is keep working, do what I can do. As long as I can feel like when I can walk out of that gym that I worked hard, I?ll leave it in God?s hands and everything will take care of itself.?
