F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

1. Deshaun Thomas' shooting continues to be off, but maybe, maybe, OSU fans shouldn't be overly worried. Thomas was 6-of-19 both Saturday and Sunday. His solution? "Keep shooting," he said. Staffers think Thomas is pressing lately, and that seems to be the case, as he tries to match his hot March from a year ago. But coach Thad Matta and others said most of Sunday was just dead shooting legs from three straight games, for not just Thomas but everyone on both teams. And Thomas got a little tired in the second half Saturday as well. The plan for today is rest, ice and massage for the players, and Thomas could use it. And then the Buckeyes need him to get his shot back, which hasn't been completely right for a couple of weeks.

Ohio State men's basketball: Thomas out to find some better shots
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch?Thursday March 21, 2013

thomas620.jpg

Deshaun Thomas said before last week?s Big Ten tournament that he wanted to take good shots and be as efficient on offense as he could be to help Ohio State win it.

He scored 52 points in three games and was voted to the all-tournament team as the Buckeyes won the title for the third time in four years. But in the last two victories, over Michigan State and Wisconsin, he took 38 shots to score 33 points, and nearly half the attempts were three-pointers.

?They were questionable,? Thomas acknowledged yesterday. ?Some of them.?

Beside him, guard Aaron Craft stifled a laugh and dropped his head to conceal his face from television cameras.

They could afford to smile about it at that point. But with the NCAA Tournament starting this week, and one loss meaning the end of the season, Thomas? shot selection has been addressed with him by coaches, and he understands he needs to adjust.

Ohio State, the No. 2 seed in the West Region, opens tournament play Friday night against Iona in the University of Dayton Arena.

Although the Buckeyes are on a season-high eight-game winning streak, their leading scorer?s shooting percentage has dipped lately as he has struggled to make shots from behind the arc. Thomas has missed 45 of 55 three-point attempts in the past 10 games.

Saturday against Michigan State, he tied his career high with 11 three-point attempts but made only two. Sunday against Wisconsin, he missed all six. Afterward, coach Thad Matta said that, ?as a shooter,? sometimes Thomas ?tries to shoot his way out of problems.?

?Coach is right. I just keep shooting. I want one to go down so bad,? said Thomas, who led all Big Ten players in points per game this season.

?I learned that you?ve got to do something else. If I?m in a one-on-one situation, I?m going to try to get the best shot that I can, or if a man helps on me, kick it out and get a better shot.?

1-year-old son helps Thomas mature on and off court
March 21, 2013

DAYTON, Ohio ? There's something about that first diaper that makes Deshaun Thomas laugh.

"It was fun, but it was kind of different-smelling," the Ohio State junior forward says, smiling.

Changing your baby's first diaper ? the seminal moment of fatherhood ? came months and months ago for Thomas, but the memory is fresh. Thomas' son, Deshaun Jr., turns 1 year old Friday, a year after Thomas missed his birth to play in the Sweet 16. Deshaun Jr. will be in attendance as No. 2 seed Ohio State takes on No. 15 seed Iona, and Thomas is excited they'll get to share the day together.

If Ohio State advances, though, he'll probably have to miss Deshaun Jr.'s birthday party, which is slated for Sunday. But even those rare days Thomas doesn't see his son, he's reminded of how much fatherhood has transformed him.

"It's changed me a lot," Thomas said. "It's made me grow up. It makes me work harder at my craft. It makes me be humble, knowing there's someone who's watching you and looking up to you now."

. Efficient Deshaun Thomas is back, and that's a very big deal. "Yeah, I'm back in business," Thomas said with a laugh. After consecutive 6-for-19 games in the Big Ten Tournament, Thomas was 8-for-12 against Iona, scoring 24 points, his first time reaching 20 points since Valentine's Day. Thomas found space in the middle of Iona's zone and didn't force 3-pointers, making all three of his 3-point attempts. Lenzelle Smith said the Buckeyes told Thomas, "Get in then middle, and we'll get you the ball and turn around and shoot that, and that's exactly what he did." So 8-of-12, two assists, no turnovers, must be what Thad Matta is looking for from Thomas. "Bingo," Matta said. "He was much more relaxed, much more engaged in timeouts."

Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas Ohio State junior Deshaun Thomas talks about his efficiency in an 8-for-12 shooting effort, for 24 points, in the Buckeyes' 95-70 win over Iona in an NCAA Tournament opener on March 22, 2013. Watch video

2. Thomas has come up with a great birthday present for his son, Deshaun Jr. A year ago Thomas scored 24 points against Cincinnati in the NCAA Tournament in Boston on the day he was born. Friday was his first birthday, and Thomas scored 24 again. "It's got to be something special," Thomas said. "It's be good if I could get 30. But 24, that's good."

I don't know if anyone will get on Thomas about not guarding the three-point line very well sometimes against Iowa State but I think we all have to remember that when Matta goes to that small lineup that DeShaun is responsible for taking the other team's big man so he has to work harder on defense, harder on rebounding, and harder on offense. While watching the game, I started to get mad at him about not getting out on the three-pointers against some shooters from Iowa State but then I remembered all that he had to do during a game and he has not gotten much rest this season.

He is bound to make one of his son's birthdays:)
When Deshaun Thomas Jr. was born March 22, 2012, his father couldn’t share the moment. Deshaun Sr. was in Boston with the Buckeyes and scoring 24 points in a Sweet 16 victory over Cincinnati. Said Dad: “I know one day when he’s getting to talking and he asks that question, ‘Dad, were you there?’ I’ll say, ‘Son, I was there in spirit. I had a great game against Cincinnati ... and it was all for you ….’ ” When DT2 celebrated his first birthday on Friday, Thomas scored 24 points for him again, against Iona, and he was in University of Dayton Arena to see it.
